Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Just checking, has anyone else read "The Egg And I" by Betty McDonald? If not, I really must insist that anyone raising chickens read it, especially if they're in Washington state. I must warn that some of the social comments are very antiquated and sometimes offensive, however it is a historical book. If you do pick it up please keep that in mind.

I haven't read it. But I live pretty close to where it happened.

Betty McDonald was here a short time, and never really "fit in" with the locals. There's still a teensy bit of resentment here about the way she portrayed a couple of local farm families. She and her husband had no idea what they were doing, and it shows in that book.

That said, the book was the inspiration of all the Ma and Pa Kettle movies, and later the TV show Green Acres. And here in the Chimacum Valley really is Green Acres! :D

It's a good book if one lives separate from the actual events. And I found some of the comedy of the story to be how little they knew. I love the detail about how wild, rugged, and beautiful this area was/is. Betty spent her teen years near where my grandmother grew up. I often dream of the simpler life of yester-year but with the knowledge of today.

Today we found our first egg!!! My girls are only 15 weeks old. It's tiny but, I am very excited. My roo "Pepper" is mounting them but, they haven't been going for his advances

The old show Ma and Pa Kettle is based of The Egg and I" novel

The locals that were portrayed as Ma & Pa, sued the author. I recently asked someone in the know, how the lawsuit ended, and, it was the family of Ma & Pa who came out good in the end.

I buy my organic grains from the farm next door to where the cabin stood. When I drove school bus, I had a stop at the end of that particular drive way. There used to be some wooden remains of the cabin, but those are all gone now. Yes, I live here on Green Acres soil too. It is a great place to live after spending a fourth of my life in the hustling metropolis of the eastern Puget Sound area. Where are you located, Margaret? We are on W. Valley.

The winds were bad here. We lost several trees and loads of limbs. The most missed are the ones that held the very highest of our Asian Pears. Looks like we will be pressing the many that came down with those very top branches. We were very busy chasing items that were blown away from our big yard sale, some being pretty heavy items. We gave up the yard sale after getting all of the items that needed to stay dry, under cover. We still have a whole lot left over and will be back at it again on Friday. I just hope I get everything out that I want gone. It really is nice to do a "clean and sort" on the house, barns, and shop.

Thank you all for your input on the book. I often imagined that the Kettle family was a family they had met in Montana, just imagining, because that was how that side was formed. In Montana, my grandfather was one of twelve surviving children, on a farm stead with lots of boys. I know from your responses that the author offended many, but, I loved the characters. I have a deep appreciation and respect for them...of course I wasn't raised Victorian Era like the author. I have a much less bigoted mind than that, but I like to understand history as well.
