Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

It really sounds like you guys all really had fun today at the show. Really wish I could have joined ya'll.
I am telling you right now, I will be making sure that we or I will be at the Monroe show in the spring. I hope as many people that just went to todays show will be at the Monroe one as well.
As for my tiny little chicken,Terrorbird (hope I spelled that right) will be coming on Monday to pick her up and give her a home with her birds that are the same breed and size.

Also I am glad to hear that someone has been talking to Mike and that he is well.

Just so you know, It was a great show but I love the large fowl. There were lots of birds but many many of the same breed and mostly Bantam. So not a lot of diversity of breeds and not a lot of large fowl. If you are in to Bantams there were LOTS. Buuuut, So much goes into these shows behind the scenes that we never see. So many people dedicating their time to make it all possible, so I don't care if it was mostly Bantams, it was a great show because it is so much more than that. It's peeps coming together for the CHICKENS! Come one come all! I had a great time. Thank you everyone for all your hard work!
Very true!!

I'm in Spokane Washington and am recently branching into Copper Marans!! I am unable to locate a blue copper maran rooster that is from either the jeane wade or bev davis line... anyone have one, or have suggestions on where to get one?

Thank you!!

Nicole

I'm glad you liked the soup, Chickielady. It really is good in the cold weather.

I made the mistake of laying down on the bed to talk to Mom. I've stiffened up and can barely move again.

The new birds figured out where their sleeping quarters were without any issues. We'll see how they are tomorrow.

Your potato soup was REALLY yummy, thank you so much for bringing it!  Would you mind terribly telling me, again, how to make it?  My memory is only about an inch long any more.  It was really nice meeting you Kim!

Cut up bacon into bits and cook it crispy in the stockpot. Remove bacon and pour off grease.

You can cook minced onion, celery, and carrot in some of the grease at this time if you wish to add it for more flavor, those stay in with the potatoes.

Add cubed potatoes and just enough water to cook them. Cook until potatoes start to dissolve in water.

Add milk, cream, or both to taste. Cream gives better consistancy.

Add bacon back in plus salt and pepper to taste.

If it is to runny, mash up some of the potatoes with your spoon.

I prefer ends and pieces bacon for soup since it's usually thick chunks. Russet potatoes work best, need floury not waxy potatoes. Cream makes the best soup. It really doesn't take that much.

The base soup is just potatoes cooked in water then milk and salt to taste added. You can add anything else from there. Ham is very good in it, too. I've had it with several meats regularly growing up, hamburger, buffalo burger, sausage, deer and elkburger.

Shredded cheese is good added in.

Putting bacon, chives, cheese, and a bit of sour cream in is good, too.

I don't have exact amounts when I make it. Great Grandma made it this way and it was just passed down

I don't make it very often because we tend to eat to much of it. It was a staple a few times a month when I was growing up. Hmm, I was a skinny thing until I left home. Maybe we should eat it more often.

We didn't even get there until after 2 pm, so we missed you completely. Sorry! Too many delays getting on the road this morning. I'm glad we went. We spent about 4 hours there, saw a lot of the show birds (mostly when chasing my son back and forth around the building), won a couple items in the raffle, and after a couple of hours of debating, picked out 2 chickens to bring home. Looks like my flock is going to start out with mostly ornamental breeds! I was hoping to find a couple of young, pretty LF pullets like maybe a cochin and an orpington or something. Instead I walked out with an adult Polish and a 7 month old silkie! I was tempted by some of the tiny chicks, but I can't raise more chicks right now.

I think I'm just going to leave the new girls here in the living room tonight. They're both asleep in their carriers. The Polish had a nice snack after we got home (after 8 pm, ugh), but the silkie was so tired after being in her sale cage all day that she passed right out in the van. I woke her up to take pics and get her some water, and then she laid back down and has just been a lump all night. I'm not worried about her health though, since she came from a good breeder. I couldn't find anything out about the Polish breeder, but the bird looks healthy, acts normal, has bright eyes (that I can actually see, I picked out the hen with the best field of vision) and beautiful feathers, and I haven't heard a single sneeze or funny noise from her all evening. Hmm, should I add some permethrin to her bedding in quarantine, just in case?

Since I had this crazy idea that I'd get all my birds together, at the same age, and be able to stick them in one quarantine coop, I was not prepared for birds of 3 ages from 3 sources. (Durrrrrrr, I have no brain anymore.) I figure I'll put the two newest in two dog crates out in the garage. The silkie shouldn't be a problem, but what about a hen that is laying? Do I need to put something in there for her to lay in, or will she use the bedding? And dang it, now I have to go buy layer feed tomorrow!

Justbugged thought it might be nettle, too, but it doesn't sting. No hairs on the stem or leaves. It has an herbal smell to the leaves. I'd like to know what it is, since a whole bunch are coming up in the front flower bed! If you are still interested in cedars, I can dig a bunch up and pot them. If I don't have the chance to do a road trip some time, maybe someone else who is heading over there from Seattle could take them? How many would you like?

So, here are the new birds!

Black silkie from Marjorie Best. I had to prove to my husband that she had a beak and eyes, lol. When I got home she was passed out cold in a heap of fluffy feathers and he couldn't find a face in all of it.

White crested Polish hen. I love her! I really really hope she is as healthy as she looks:
