Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I am very frustrated with my animal control laws in this town. I have chickens, they are contained in my yard and have never gotten out. I keep them clean and there is no smell etc. My neighbors on the other hand have a bunch of chickens that just free roam all over the place. They barely ever clean up after them and it stinks all the time over there. They are kept in horrible conditions. So somebody complained about them. No it was not me. Animal control told the complainer that if they tell my neighbor to get rid of the chickens then I would also have to get rid of my chickens.
What kind of sense does that make? Stupid stupid stupid people. They even told the lady that they like my chickens and that my chickens are not a problem. Didn't matter, I guess it is all or none. So I just make sure that their chickens can't get anywhere near mine. God knows what diseases they have. I also feel very bad for the conditions those chickens are captain but I am not going to say a word. I want to keep my chickens. OK I'm done ranting now.

Another one, this one is true !
We are getting 2 reg Boer/Nubian doelings...so I have occupied my working hours thinking of names.......I started with, oh well, here is the story:

I walked up to Einstein & told him " I have thought of an excellent name for one of the does !"
He says "what ?"
I says "Jane" and I cracked up (so proud of my funny name) and he did not think it very funny....and rolls his eyes.............so I said " well, if you can think of a better name, go for it"
So he looks me in the eye very serious and says    (  :lau   ) DOESIE...............:gig

So the fight is on !
FOR A WEEK.we have thought up names..............and so far I have won...
Here's mine:

1) Jane Doe
2) Tae Kwan Doe
3) Sour Doe
4) Weird Doe
5) Wall Doe
6) Pizza Doe

and then Einstein hit me with his name this morning:

Oh my, I really needed to laugh that was a good one. You're right, you came up with some great names but he did win. Now I want to see you standing out in your backyard calling that animal :)

Poultry fencing electric and not. https://www.premier1supplies.com/poultry/fencing.php

Posts. Step in ones are down a bit. Can pick them up at feed store for cheep sometimes.

I divide the 10x20 silkie pens up sometimes with a few step in posts and the plastic hardware cloth. The posts are easy to move as they only go in a few inches.

I might try those. I'm not sure if those little posts will work in my ground though. They have something called U posts that might work. I'm trying to avoid the big heavy steel tea posts. Thanks for the info. I will definitely keep looking into it.

I've thought about doing that, I did have some of them when I had a box turtle. I've also thought about the black soldier flies. But I haven't research that enough to really know what goes into it. My neighbors would be unhappy if there's a bunch of flies around.

Do some reading as the BSF looks like a wasp, not a fly, and they do not eat (they don't even have a mouth) so their only interest in food sources is a place to lay eggs. Their larvae will consume other fly larvae to reduce your fly population and they are suspected of releasing a chemical that repels flies somewhat (as a predator) to keep flies from being attracted to their food source. They consume huge amounts of compost and they can even live on poop alone (they are called privy flies). I was impressed with my research so I am excited about raising them.

Animal Control only gets involved if there are issues related to the care of birds but code enforcement can set limits that have nothing to do with the living conditions. Fortunately Animal Control is on my side even though our codes changed.

Lol, I assume you would just call her Dill and leave off the Doe!

I know the animal control person here in town, yes we have only one :) we have actually talked about my chickens, she came over one day when I caught a stray dog. She is on my side. But her hands are kind of tied. I am just angry that it doesn't matter how well my chickens are taken care of if the neighbors chickens aren't. They would still make both of us get rid of the chickens. What kind of plant is that?

Are you able to talk with the neighbor with the chickens? Maybe a bit of proactive work is in order. Help them make the living conditions better for their birds, explain the situation as you see it and pro/cons/probable outcomes. Let them know about your conversation with animal control, and that you don't want to see both of you to lose the ability to keep chickens. Be honest, be nice, be....."neighborly."

Nothing in life you want will come easy, it is always tied to work one way or another.

Whites contain the antinutrient avidin that binds biotin. Cooking helps deactivate it (but not fully). Need a good source of biotin to counteract it, which egg yolk is a very good source. Eggs are one of the easiest protein to digest, cooked or raw.
I will have to look up biotin.
I knew there was a reason I love eggs.

Been there done that it didn't work. I have tried and the landlord have stride. Part of the issue is language barrier, they speak Spanish and I don't. But even with interpreters help it hasn't done any good. The landlord gave them a bail of straw and I gave them a bail of pine shavings they literally threw both of them in the trash unused. I gave them fencing, again unused. Have tried to explain to them how to keep their chicken safe and it just has not helped. The landlord keeps saying he's going to tell them to get rid of the chickens but he hasn't done it yet. Or actually he has told them they just haven't done it they just keep adding more chickens.
This past year they pile all the chicken poop against the fence between our yards. Well with all the winter run off we've had it has killed all the grass on that side of my yard. I am not happy about it. So I am going to talk to their landlord again and emphasize that something needs to be done. It's not that I want them to get rid of their chickens, I just don't want my property damage and their poor chicken care causing me to lose my chickens. I have always been nice to them. But I am getting frustrated.
