Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I made the long drive to Longview today to stock up on bargains at FredMeyer. There's a 4x fuel rewards digital coupon for today only, so as I was leaving I filled up my truck with an 80 cent per gallon discount. I made out pretty good, and I think I have just about enough food to last me the rest of the year. LOL

Let the chickens out to forage early today, 1:30 this afternoon. They like going down into the edge of the woods and digging around for tasty things. In the past I've seen them play with snails, but they didn't eat them. Maybe now they're old enough to realize snails are edible. It's a warm day, so they might find a lizard or two too. Haha

I think I'll pull my recliner out and sit in the shade with them under the trees.

I gave my chickens the permission to go down deeper into the woods to forage this afternoon. I led them down into the trees and went in about 50 feet from the edge of the woods. I hung out with them there for about an hour.

I think they enjoyed the new environment. A couple were eating moss from a tree branch, others were scratching in the leaves looking for food, and a couple climbed up to the top of a rotted tree stump to check things out from a higher elevation.

A good time was had by all. Me included!

Ok question for you all ... Salt and pepper are about 8 weeks old now and I let them run around the chicken run in the afternoon while the big girls run around the back yard. Yesterday I must of not locked the gate because I looked out the window and they were all in the chicken run together. With out a squabble the little ones were just in a corner hiding I went out a gave everyone some chicken scratch and grubs to keep everyone busy even the little ones. So my question is how long do you have to keep them separated? They have their own coop in side the run. They have been out there in their gray coop in the run since they where like 3 or 4 weeks old. So the big girls have seen them for the past month just could not touch them.

I think they are fine to be with the big girls now. My chicks are raised in a part of the coop and opened up to the big girls at a very young age, maybe 5 or 6 weeks. I've not had a problem with it at all. For one thing the little ones are faster. lol But no one has chased them. It's a chicken world and there are chicks in chicken world.

My flocks are very accepting so my experiences may be different. But it sounds like you could put them together. Just know that pecking order will need to be established which is mostly older girls letting younger ones know they are on the botton. They have to maintain their positions.
