Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I decided to bag up some fresh herbs and put them in the freezer. I know some of them will be available through the winter, like the parsley and rosemary. Maybe thyme too. But I don't know if the oregano, tarragon and marjoram lose their leaves over the winter or not. So I just picked some of each. I bagged up green dill seeds and saved dry dill seeds too.

Oregano is pretty hardy. Not too sure about the parsley.
I had a flat leaf parsley plant that kept me in green leaves all last winter. The parsley leaves even survived that blast of temps in the teens, as did the red Russian kale. But the deer kept pruning them off. LOL

I know for sure that I'll leave at least one parsley plant in the ground into next year so it will set on blooms. The one I let overwinter last year got huge, and was covered with tiny blossoms for a long time. And it attracted scads of pollinators and little tiny killer wasps that lay eggs on moth caterpillars. There were tons of the little wasps. And actually, the plant smelled pretty good when it was blooming.

I want a sage plant, but none of the seeds I planted last spring sprouted. Might just have to buy a little sage plant next spring.

I might set up a separate herb garden somewhere, and move the plants from where they're growing now. I might try throwing down dill seeds along the edge of the woods this fall and see if they grow. They'd have pretty much full sun, but I don't know if the deer would eat them.

My mint is over running one end of the garden now. Sage doing well. Have had my rosemary for a couple years but it is in a pot and goes in the green house in the winter. Wouldn’t need to, that’s for sure.

I wish I could grow a lot of parsley. I buy it every week and use it a lot. I’d have to dedicate a whole raised bed to it to keep up with us, so I don’t bother.

I had mint and have been trying to chop it out. I just don't use the stuff, and it's too invasive for me.

I just went out and took a couple pics of my "parsley patch". It looks kind of ragged right now because I picked a bunch today, and then I watered it. The water makes the leaves drop to the ground. I think there are 4 curly, 2 flat leaf parsley plants there. With a lavender plant in the corner.

The chives started firming up after I watered them a couple hours ago. They were pretty wilted from being dry. I'll try to go out tomorrow morning and chop them down to the ground so they can rejuvinate with new stems. And I'll put the cuttings in the freezer.

Just let the girls out to roam. It's pretty windy, so I'm not too worried about coyotes. I think wildlife tends to hunker down when it's windy because they can't hear things as well.

The turnip roots I put back into the ground are beginning to sprout new leave. Turnip greens on the way!
