A trick I used making a 5 gallon bucket of kraut was to simply stir it daily. Prevented throwing away the top layer when it was done. Yours will be tasty, either way.I'm trying to root some sprigs of rosemary in water, got them at my son's house yesterday. Sprigs are in a tiny glass of water, the glass is in a bowl of water to add humidity, the whole thing covered by another glass container to contain the moisture. Hope I get at least one to make roots.
Also made the beginnings of sauerkraut yesterday with my DIL. I shredded a 5 pound head of cabbage, mixed it with some salt and worked it until it released enough juice to totally cover the cabbage. A sealed baggie of salt water is on top to hold the cabbage under the surface while it ferments.

Weren't your pullets chicks this past year? They wouldn't molt yet, then, or maybe time has gone by faster then I can keep up with.I went down to the apple tree and picked 6 of the smaller apples, one for each of the girls. And only 2 eggs today, an all time record low. I'm thinking the molt is coming.

I hear you. Back when DH was young, we would try to diy most things. Now we've decided to just call the professionals. Save time, and ourselves, especially from clumsy injuries. It's better for our health. Just had a garage door company come to bid replacements for our original 38 year old creaky, wooden ones.Just called a electrical guy here town hook up the connection for the on demand water heaters we have to install.

I have used green tomatoes to make salsa verde, subbing for the tomatillos. Have also made green tomato relish, a Texas staple to eat with fried catfish. Any fried fish, actually.Hmm maybe use the green tomato left make more or simpler sauce for burritos we have.

The deer came through and ate all my lower grape vines, and anything they could get to. Roses, columbine, any fruit tree leaves withing their reach, fallen plums. No apples for them, since the trees are inside the chicken yard.Always tons of deer around here, but we don't feed them. Can't get rid of them if we do.
