Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Oh...hmm. One thing I didn't think about was that by Feb 26th when I could get the 2nd group of chicks, she will already have been sitting for almost 6 weeks. I don't think I should put my own selfish ambitions of having 2 more breeds of chicks before her health. That's an awful long time for her to be in the nest :( I think I'll scrap this idea and just try next year for a SLW and SS.
That is pushing her body limits for 6 weeks. I would do the other breeds with your next broody, you'll prolly have another go broody before summer. Also, really research on the Wyandotte. I would avoid hatchery stock if you want this breed for looks. Breeders will have better looking and better temperament too( I have read they can be b**chy).

Oh thanks, I'll do that. I had a GLW but she died early this fall. I don't know what happened to her, she just got really, really ill (I never could find a wound or source of illness) and we had to cull her. She was a bit... quirky; didn't want to be near me and when she was she'd peck me. She was from Baxter Barn though and they have pretty good quality birds from what I've seen.

I am, however, happy about how today went with the birds. I only saw them briefly this morning and by the time I got home from that evil place they were sleeping, but the few birds that usually peck at my legs were staying back since I'm now pecking them first

I really like the look of the Wyandottes, but after all my researching I decided not to get them. I just can't handle mean birds. If my rehab with Little Red fails, off to the soup pot for her. She just can't help but seek out the teens and peck them(and not just move, I am higher in the order than you pecks). She took a chunk of Amber's comb today, poor girl had blood dripping down her beak. Then Pig Pen grabbing her comb during mating wasn't helping. I had to run him off several times today.

I've kind of been thinking about if I want more of the larger of the large fowl as well. I want good foragers, great egg layers, and pretty birds. I love the big fat fluffy look of Orpingtons, Wyandottes, Australorps, etc, but I don't think they're very efficient. I LOVE the gorgeous look of a lot of EEs and Ameraucanas, Speckled Sussex, Faverolles, etc, but they're no guarantee for lots of eggs. And unfortunately most of the REALLY, really good egg layers I think are pretty ugly and boring (RIR for instance). So, right now I have some choices to make. Keep bigger birds for their looks and temperment but have not-so-great layers, or sell some birds in favor of an uglier (to me) flock that lays prolifically. Right now I have:
2 Buff Orpingtons
6 EEs (I'm counting my blue Ameraucana and my olive egger in here)
1 RIR
1 BCM
1 Welsummer
1 Black Australorp

My 4 new chicks will be: 1 more BA, 1 more EE, and 2 Barred Rocks

Maui is way better IMO than Oahu. Oahu is too much like PDX or Seattle. Big city life, lots of homeless, crowded, rush hour traffic. Maui, everything is laid back and mellow. People are WAY nicer on Maui.
I don't EVERY go to those kind of places. WAY too much going on all at once.
Maui is most definitely WAY better than the other islands, IMHO. We've been twice, and really like this older resort called Papakea, where you can park in front of your condo. It's within minutes of all the good snorkle beaches. The "Farmer's market" grocery store is 2 blocks away, and they have tons of organic food, plus gluten free, dairy free options. I think I ate coconut milk tapioca pudding every single day. I bet we saw 20 couples get married at Black Rock at sunset.

That's awesome! I've never been anywhere but Kauaii and it was awesome too. Super small, quaint, not very touristy, and we did nothing but lay on the beach for a week, kayak once up a river to some falls, and drive to the Wiameia Canyon (the grand canyon of Hawaii). I hate big city feel, so it was pretty awesome to see no cities at all while we were there.

Busy BYCers tonight? Where is everyone? My kids are finally asleep and I'm sitting here still feeling the effects of anxiety from that dreadful, terrible, rotten, no good place called a "Family Fun Center." My heart is tight and I feel like crying. From an afternoon of fun. Wowza. Someone come talk to me and make me feel better.
It must be a full moon, because my son has been off the charts the last couple days. I'm going to drop him in a tub with epson salt...or wait- maybe I am the one that needs the tub ("~*Calgon, take me away!*~). Seriously, some days I am so thankful for our (used/Craigslist) hot tub, there's just no words..... and Jessica, you are welcome to call me!
