Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

We live in bellingham... so very north of you in Kelso (although we go to kelso for thier Highland games, thats our other passion, my daughter is a competive highland dancer)I have gotten some older chickens thanks to cregs list, i was getting 2-3 eggs almost every day till the all got mad at me a few days ago (i was having one of my girls sleeping in the nesting boxes, so i have been blocking them off for the past few days) So i believe in protest they wont give me eggs until they forgive me... lol:he  today i did get one...:) On tuesday i did get some babvy chicks (om goodness they are so cute) my daughter came home and her words where "Mom is that my old toy box" of course it was, so now shes not very happy with me ( I just figured it wasnt being used so i clamed it, she just turned 15 so i guess i should have asked) i did tell her i would give it back and her responce "MOM like i'm going to want it back after its had chicks in it" couldnt be anyworse then it sitting out side with water, from all the rain...lol:weee Ohhh well as a mom i guess i failed this week..lol;

That is TOO funny! That's a great way to repurpose a toy box. ROFLOL!

I'm so excited. My 3 eggs are going into lockdown monday. I cannot wait for them to hatch.

Fun! I hope they all make it!!

Is there *any* possible way my broody might take the 4 chicks I'm giving her on the 12th AND a couple more on the 26th? 2 weeks apart. WDYT? That's a big long shot isn't it. SFS has a couple more breeds I really want in my flock, but not until the 26th. Boo.

it is possible. One of my hens when not even broody I can give her some chicks and sometimes she will start caring for them, keeping them warm and quit laying eggs during that time.

Since this is her first time broody, I would either not add the second group, or wait and brood the first group yourself for 2weeks and then put ALL of them together under her. The latter is what I myself would do.

Would 2 week old chicks "listen" to her by then?
They should. I have heard of folks putting up to 4 week old chicks under broodies and do just fine.

Oh...hmm. One thing I didn't think about was that by Feb 26th when I could get the 2nd group of chicks, she will already have been sitting for almost 6 weeks. I don't think I should put my own selfish ambitions of having 2 more breeds of chicks before her health. That's an awful long time for her to be in the nest :( I think I'll scrap this idea and just try next year for a SLW and SS.

Have I mentioned lately how much I love this group? Y'all talk/walk me through all my ideas and help me so much! Thanks for letting me bounce off my ideas and see what new info I can glean.
