Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Just got home to find that one of the pips has popped and 2 more have piped. So I have 2 chicks and 3 pips. All BCM

Yahoo! Congrats!

3 BCM and 1 OE have pipped here. The OE that pipped was the one that was in the automatic egg turner with the 6 BCM. I moved that OE to OE bator at lockdown. It just dawned on me - it makes sense that it was the first to pip because the bator with the automatic turner was only opened to add water and 1x to weigh the eggs. I'm guessing the rest of the OE will hatch later, because I had to open that bator 3, 4, 5 times a day to turn eggs which would have caused a slight amount of cooling a few times each day.

I never candled any of these eggs - so I really wasn't sure who was developing. I did weigh every egg once early this week, and all 12 eggs had lost weight, so I took that as a good sign.

I can hear chirping from across the room that I'm in.

Hahaha. That's funny about your DH starting to like chickens. My DW is already attached to the Silkies I got her. I asked her if she would ever join BYC, she said she will prolly live vicariously through me. But she does sit and read post with me almost every day now.

I doubt my husband would ever join BYC either. He's not into social networking, forums, or anything like that - other than for reading. He doesn't even have a Facebook account and has no desire to. His Kindle automatically logs into my BYC account - so sometimes it looks like I'm online if he is reading something on BYC. He does read up on chicken keeping - in fact, yesterday he called to remind me of a few things I needed to do with the eggs, like removing the egg turner, even though I had already done it. It just proved to me that he really is keeping up with what needs to be done.

For anyone with virus issues, I'd like to suggest following the procedures given at MajorGeeks.com. They have an exceptionally good team of volunteers that will work with you. But it is super important to follow their instructions. Here is a link to the Malware Removal section of their forum:

Quote: It is wonderful to hear how accommodating your utility crew was under the circumstances and also that you learned to use your generator. Our ole generator is so cranky it takes an expert to get it running right. LOL Well, at least someone who knows the tricks like my DH. It cracks me up too that your DH is enjoying egg brooding so much. It's so cool when the hubbies do catch chicken fever too. Makes it all that much more fun as you share experiences. I look forward to seeing your next batch of chicks. We can't wait to get our own BA chicks probably in Feb. or so. They grow up so fast as you know so well so am looking forward to lots of eggs this summer. The next couple of months will be long ones for me waiting, plus I don't like winter. Too cold, windy & wet and I don't like snow & ice. So glad we got the reptile light for Betsy Barr Rock. She is doing very well all alone in the coop with it. Wonder how she will like her new family this spring? Sure do like your 'isolation pen' so showed it to DH so he can make me something like it for when we introduce Betsy to the new kids down the road. But I guess I am getting ahead of myself.

This looks like a very helpful website. I am going to bookmark it. I spent hours and hours last week figuring out how to clean up my PC. A lot of what I hunted down seems to be all together at this site. Unfortunately my hard drive has been making odd sounds so I do kind of expect a crash. Well. At least I had a desk top that began with an odd sound that eventually led to a crash so feel I must be super diligent about backing up files which is always a good practice anyway. Who knows! Better be safe than sorry. ~Dee~

My Wife does FB but she works on a computer all day(accountant) and does the treasury for our church, but she does know that BYC is mobile now. Who knows. Most of the time if I can't answer a question she tells me to ask my chicken people. I usually let her educate our friends that come over and ask about the chickens.

Hope all you pipping and popping have some beautiful healthy chicks. Very exciting and fun to see your pics and all. ~Dee~

They actually eat them? Ooo.. that's not good. Chasing the tweety birds is one of my big girl's favorite daily activities. And here I've been laughing at their antics - thinking it was funny. I didn't have a clue chickens actually ate tweety birds. I'll have to keep a closer watch on making sure they don't catch one.

Chickens are actually vicious killers.

But seriously, they are very fond of the occasional meat treats. My mom ran in the house squealing about my gold sexlink running around the yard with a baby shrew during the summer. I found half of a mouse (the back half) in their pen when I let them out one time. Another time, when I was doing some pen maintenance, I saw a mouse bounce through. George was hot on its heels, but it got through the chicken wire with no time to spare. She was so disappointed. Small birds are no different to chickens. The Pine Siskin was probably going for their food and didn't anticipate their reaction. I hate the fact that they killed and ate the poor thing and would have stopped it from happening if I was able to. I hope that none of your birdies goes the way of that Siskin.
