I am beyond ****** off. I almost have no words. I have to clean the kitchen now because I basicly went in and threw a fit throwing stuff evety where.
After yesterdays coyote take, I wished I had a broody hen to put my turkey eggs under, but sense I didn't was just going to incubate them. Then yesterday I discovered my wish came true. One of my BEST mommas had gone broody all of a sudden (it is very easy to know when here and her twin are broody). She has rasied many chicks and been an amazing mom. I made sure to lock up the coop lastnight.
This morning I went to let everone our only to find that something pryed open the chicken door and ripped my girl right out of the nest!
None of my chickens will come out of the coop today.
I hadplanned on building (and had started) a run to keep them safe, but then we figured out we are moving. Now I don't have the darn money to build it. And what I started I took down and most of the wood I bought has been used for other things.
I may end up setting up a tent on the roof of the coop and sitting.in it all night. Aaaarrrggg!

I have no idea if this would work but how about setting the tent up over your coop and then add light, music... Maybe pee all around the tent area so they know you mean business? Maybe they will stay away then? I couldn't imagine how I would react to this kind of attack to my babies. I am so sorry.

Yes, I am. I'm going to start showing/breeding heritage RC RIR Bantams. There is less than 100 in breeding pens this winter. I am planning on helping conserve the breed. And I will talk to the person who is helping me build this about adding a fan or something similar to what we have in the LF coop for ventilation....

I don't know your situation in housing but how about bringing your roos inside during the hours that your neighbors are home in the morn and eve. Put them out at 9 am and in by the time they come home from work like 4pm. I think it would be easier to soundproof a room or garage than a chicken coop. Even if you put a fan in it that is an electrical draw and you saw this last week how many people had problems with power. Even my infrared heat lamp blew a bulb last night. Lucky I found it on my evening rounds and had a backup bulb.

I think I'd be sitting up all night with something to take out the predator. That just sucks. I'm very sorry.

I use a 10gal storage tub with thin layer of shavings, no food or water(it will be completely dark anyway so they wont eat or drink) and put them in and cover with lid leaving about 2" not covered for ventilation. You have to have at least a few chicks so they can huddle for warmth. This method keeps them warm enough for several hours(we lose power a lot from downed trees). If the power is off for more than 5 hours our jeep has a 120v plug that I can plug the heating pad into and warm it up to put in with them.
