Experts expect long, nasty flu season
"I would urge everyone, not just for themselves, but for their friends, neighbors and relatives and their children to get vaccinated right away," McDonald said..

I'm allergic to egg whites, so I can't get the flu shot. Since I had heard it's pretty bad this year, I've been trying to avoid large crowds. With an auto-immune and no way to vaccinate, we even stopped going to church. The kids will probably pick up something at school though.

Can't remember which families kids was into railroads?

Hopefully this is an event you can take them to I saw advertised today in Monroe.........................

United Northwest Model Railroad Club is proud to announce its 22ndannual model railroad show and swap meet to benefit Snohomish County 4-H Foundation February 2 - 3, 2013. It is hosted at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds in Monroe WA. The 2013 Show will be in the same area but in different buildings.

COOL! Thanks for the info!

OK peeps! Egg sound off! How many eggs are you getting each day, from how many chickens? And do you use supplemental lighting?

I'm getting 6-7 a day from 12 pullets on supplemental lighting. Who's next?

I'm back to getting 2-3 egs a day from 3 laying pullets. Hooray! Yes, on the lighting, but it's not consistent. I'm still using a battery operated light in the coop that I have to remember to turn on/off.

I go though 50lbs right now, keep in mind I normally free range all day(that has changed due to hawk attacks) and have the chicks too. I know once I get the new coops and covered runs built after Hawaii trip in a couple of weeks, feed consumption will go back down a little. But I am also starting Fermented Feed tomorrow. That should reduce consumption even more( creates a better conversion rate)

I'm back to free-ranging the big girls and tractor-range the two intermediates. I'm loving having my "grassy poops" back to clean up. LOL! Chicken feed poops stink. Bleh. My girls have access to food in the run, and the tractor has food, but the chickens prefer to nibble on grass all day. They have food and water in the coop at night now and they tend to snack a little before going to sleep, but they don't eat much, even with the light on, so I think they're getting enough food during the day.

I have to keep humidity low in my house. If I get mold inside I may die. I am severely allergic. So our humidity is usually around 20-40%, which is bad for someone with severely dry skin(eczema). I am pretty sure it is just a cold and not the flu. I am starting to get pressure on my ear drums, which for me means sinus cold. I can live with that.

You and I need to chat! I'm extremely allergic to mold, too. I haven't measured humidity or anything like that - never thought to. One of my 4 weekly allergy shots contains quite a few different varieties of mold. I was allergic to every one of the molds they tested me for - not cool since I live in Washington! It's gotten better with the shots, but I opened up the greenhouse door today and whew - it was instant, my throat started to swell closed. Gotta get my mask on and clean that thing out. I think that bale of straw that's sitting in there is starting to mold. If I can bring myself to getting that thing in a wheelbarrow, it's gonna go over the cliff.

Itsren, my sister can't get a flu shot for the same reason. You'd think they come up with something else to grow it in.

I agree! My doc said egg white is used in many medications or to coat meds, too. She said it could be why I have an allergic reaction to many, many medications, including common OTC meds. She said she believes that egg whites are being overused in many industries and our bodies aren't meant to take in foods in excess. She said she believes that is why the most common things are becoming huge allergens and thinks it will get worse for more people over time.

ROYCE!!!!!!! How the heck are you my friend? Hope you are doing great! Are you still working on your Barnies? How are they coming along? How is their egg color doing? I miss my Barnies more than I thought I ever would have! Maybe sometime later down the road I will resume my Blue Laced Barnie project. I still have my F1 single laced Blue pullet. She is such a sweet-tart that I could never give her up...and she is a great layer.
Question for ya.......do you know of any Birchen Marans, Solid Black/Blue or perhaps even Blue Cuckoo Marans breeders in WA. State?

Hi Kim, Hope I'm not messing up the thread by replying so late. This thread moves so fast and I don't follow it as much as I do my breed threads. I'm doing well. Hope you are too. Yes, I'm still working on my Barnies. They're doing well. Truly not trying to brag here but one of my Barnie pullets took BB and Reserve Continental behind one of my Welsummer pullets at the Chehalis show. That is the 6th show in a row that they've won BB and/or Reserve Continental.

What are you using for your BL Barnie project? I don't know if you remember but I started a Rosecomb Barnie project a couple years back. Got one hen now that is very nicely lace but a lousy RC. Got a cockerel from her this year that has a pretty nice RC and pretty decent lacing. I'll breed him back to his mom and am hoping that will put me where I want to be - or at least very close. Then, since I'll already have RC Barnies, I'm gonna cross those with my BLRW's and see if I can get some nice RC BL Barnies.

Sorry, I can't help ya out on the Marans. I haven't really followed them. I did get a few BCM gals just so I can cross them with my Ameraucanas and get some more deep olive laying EE's.

It's good to hear from ya. Been a LONG time. Here's hoping you had a great Christmas and brought in the new year well. And here's passing on the very best wishes for a great new year and a terrific hatching season.

I'm running down to Lowe's tomorrow after church for some heavy duty hinges to replace the gates on some breeding pens along with some new lumber for new nesting boxes. With any luck at all I'll finally have birds in the breeding pens tomorrow after saying for the past 3-4 week that I was gonna do it. I'm really looking forward to having babies in the house again. I know, sounds stupid but I miss it. Now I just gotta find me a good woman who wants to help me take care of 'em! LOL

Anyways, thanks for the welcoming. Stay in touch...

God Bless,
