Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Happy early Valentine's Day everyone! Tomorrow we'll have school in the morning and make family V-day cards and crafts for each other. I have small cards and gifts for the kids too. DH got a babysitter (I didn't even ask or suggest it!) and we're going on a date from 1-6; might see a movie if there's anything still out there we want to see. Only things I can think of are Breaking Dawn II or The Hobbit. I'm sure we'll eat out too, since we can without the kids!

Hello, the Forum! It's my first post here so by way of introduction, I live in unincorporated Mason County near Shelton with my DP, 2 Corgwyn, 1 German Shepherd and 5 hens ( 2 RIR, 2 Ameracauna, 1 Australorp). The dogs and hens are free range on the fenced portion of our property. Yes even the Bad German Shep (there is history there... A tale for another time). We are looking to expand the flock this spring with another 4-5 hens and possibly a rooster. Nice to meet you all!
welcome!!!

Oh so sorry to hear this, I've been really sick and run down since Christmas :( I got the flu, then a month long cold with checst cough that needed antibiotics to kick, well again but tired for 2 more weeks then caught a horrid cold again. I'm almost well again but finally picked up everthing I need to make myself some awesome Elderberry Syrup. I plan to take it every day to boost my immune system. Would you like me to bring you some next week when I make it? It will be completely organic, consisting of extract of elderberries, ginger, cinnamon, echinacea, cloves, and raw honey.
I'd love to have some- and I'd return the favor! I ran out of Sambucol after the first 2 sick people in the house.

As SOON as I get my Frontier order early next week I'm making my own. I have a bottle I bought that I'm currently going through and I think it's helping! But MAN! That stuff is expensive. Getting into making it myself was expensive too, about 3x the cost of a bottle, but those bulk ingredients will easily make 8-10 large bottles/jars of syrup. As soon as I make it I'll text you and try to run some by!

Have you eaten at the Iron Grill in Covington, across from Office Depot? We really like the fresh "make your own" stir-fry. We bring our own GF teriaki or soy sauce to avoid gluten. I requested a break from cooking and a few hours of rest for Valentine's dinner- and stir fry sounds awesome.

Olympians in the group here

Geesh, already more then a thousand posts since I was last here. :p ya all talk a lot! :)
I am looking for some duck eggs to hatch. Runners or good meat birds preferred, no real breeding preference (such as SQ or colors etc).

Manipulating genetics has been going on for 12,000 years. All domesticated crops and animals have some kind of genetic meddling done by man. Maize was just like a grass once just with a larger kernel than you see on crabgrass. By the time colonists made it to the shores of North America, it was very different looking than what was started with and is a lot more now. GMO can mean any kind of gene manipulation including taking a tassel from a popcorn cane and pollinating some silver queen stalks. Taking drought resistant traits and putting them into a high production crops generally would not produce reaction in a human, poorly cleaned corn that still has herbicide and pesticide on it such as taking corn in the husk and throwing them into a pot to cook without shucking them can cause serious reactions and only highlights poor legislation and stupid consumers. Animal treatment also comes under this last statement.
Do you marvel at the yellow and purple potatoes, or the yellow watermelons? How about the many colors of tomatoes. That is all, technically, GMO. Some done with gene insertions in a  dish or DNA replicator. How about all the colors of flowers, all done with cross and selective breeding and doing what nature would normally not do.
All the allergies that people are coming up with in the last 40-50 years you can thank additives, food coloring, and chemicals both in the fields and in the air you breath & water you drink in the suburbs.

OK I have to split this up.
Yes we humans have been "Genetically modifying" plants and animals for thousands of years...... But that is not what is identified as GMO. The issue with GMO is the genetic materials that come from something that could never have been in the natural selection/crossbreeding that we have done for thousands of years. I have major issues with viruses, animal genes being used in plants and making food plants "poisonous" to bugs (I think the scientist forget that people eat the plants that they are trying to stop the bugs from eating) which is most likely not good for us. I do not want food that does not rot, grows at unnatural speed/size and messing with the ecosystem. Did you know that if I plant corn of a non-GMO variety and if someone with in 5 miles (I think that is the size) plants GMO corn My corn will produce GMO kernels dues to cross pollination? That means that now my corn contains genetic material from what ever they think to add in. I think everyone should have a choice. and I think we should want things labeled and something like Heritage (natural selection/breeding) and GMO (genetically modified in a lab with "name" genetics)

That being said I think there is a lot of good Genetic modifications can do! I personally benefit from the research done on the genome mapping and other genetic reproduction/cloning/3D printing etc. I might be able to get my vision back due to a lot of the research there and with stem cells. They have narrowed down to the specific gene and are now working on possible retro-virus or stem cell solutions. My mom and my sister have taken meds from this kind of research to put their problems in remission. I hope that my niece and nephew will live to see diabetes 1 and 2 cured. They do incredible things in labs.

But I still want to know where my food comes from and if there was any lab mixing of species/chemicals/viruses in my food source.

Does anyone here have a way to get ahold of Wa4-Hpoultrymom? She is not answering her PMs and I know she has not been on here in a long while. I would like to try and get some more eggs from her!

Does she have your phone number? I can text her and let her know to call you.

Hey anyone have suggestions for veggies to grow out front of my house that look like yummy ones but actually taste gross?   I know this sounds weird but last year people came and took all my green beans when i wasn't home.  That is what i planted out front last year.

I plan to plant some corn out front that is the nasty starchy cattle feed type.    Trying to figure out some other things.   I hope when they take the corn and eat it that they take a huge first bite of it!!

Any chance of setting up a web cam to catch them in the act? If you can post a sign in your garden that says that the garden is monitored 24/7 and that anyone who takes from the garden will have their photo posted on all telephone polls in the area as well as on facebook.

Your not going to find anything nasty enough for them to stop. But your going to have to do the flyer thing at least once before they believe you.
