Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Ok, pallet coop is done except for hardware cloth and small windows and pop door. If dry tomorrow it will get caulked. Need to move wiring from temp coop to the pallet coop. Paint will prolly happen in May/June. Looks like the LF get moved tomorrow. Also need to fence the run, but that will be quick. Then get to start the Silkie pen(next week). I will get pics up prolly Sunday of what I have done in "My Coop"

OK, my babies are my my BFF's keeping warm and safe. I have a Light Brahma (Fluffy), a RIR (Beaks), and a Blue Laced Red Wyandotte (Lace). I have pictures on my camera, and need to move them to my laptop to share.

We are converting a former dog pen, that became a goat pen, into a chicken coop. It's been at least 2 years, if not 3, since any animals were in the pen, so I'm cleaning it up and getting it ready for my girls. The top bars had colapsed from snow a few years ago, so we are replacing it all and a new tarp. My DH is so funny. At Christmas he called me one day saying he went to a local hardware box store to get the pipes for the pen, but they were too long to fit in his Toyota sedan. I have a Toyota pickup so he asked if I could stop by the store and pick them up. He was planning to get them for me as a Christmas gift. I replied I could do that, but did I really have to pay for my own gift? He stammered, then said no, no, we would go together so he could pay.

With the babies growing it is time to get moving on the rebuild of the pen. Someone around here told me I need to put lime down to make sure there are no worms or other parasites in the pen from the dogs and goats. Anyone know anything about this? Is it valid? Or can I just put a barrier down, like plastic, then put my sand on top? I plan to get pavers to place around the outside and the inside of the pen to prevent diggers from getting in. Any other suggestions or prevention I need to know about?

Thanks in advance.
OK. I found a way to email a picture of the babies to myself from my phone, from a text from my GF where the babies are. My two are the tiny RIR towards the left and the yellow fluff.
The left most, and upper most, chicks are my GF's babies.

They are soooo cute, love them!

I hope someone is still up to answer this....

I have been watching the chicks like a crazy hawk to make sure these babies are safe. And they really seem to be doing fine. I wonder if I can leave them overnight? They seem to be fine with where the light is and there is a cuddle puddle in the middle, and ee sleeping on the perch and one past out by her food. I'm not goin to lie, I have five pretty darn healthy kids and I rarely check temperatures of anything. I figure common sense would apply with chickens, if they're shivering, they are too cold, far away from the heat source, they're probably too warm, so I'm thinking they may just be ok?

Ok, so sadly Chance did not make it. I had to separate Chance and Sushi last night because Sushi was pecking at Chance a lot. But when I got up this morning Chance would not open either of her eyes and they were both "goopy", then about a half hour later she was having what appeared to be a seizure. I had to put her out of her pain.
Made a trip back to Bothell Feed Center to get Sushi a friend (they told me if Chance died, to come back and they would give me a friend for Sushi.) and came back with four friends. Our kids have been wanting chickens to call their own again so I got a variety for them to pick form. Sushi is a Barred Rock, and now I also have a Buff Orpington, a Delaware, a Brown Leg Horn and a Road Island Red. Each kid has picked theirs and I am awaiting names from the kids.

As far as the house that we put on offer on, well they counter offered. We already though our offer was way to much for the amount of work that needed to be done so we decided to back off

. I really, REALLY wanted that house so badly that (I waited until DH fell asleep) I cried about not getting it. If I had let DH see me cry about it he would have pushed up the offer until we got it but we would not have been able to afford it. That is how he is with me, if I really want some thing he goes blind to logical thinking and makes what ever I want happen.
But good news, I found another house already. I am waiting to hear back from my agent when we can go look at it. This house only has 3 bed rooms so we will have to build 3 more onto it. But this one has a shop for DH (the other one didn't) and there are horse and goat stalls, a HUGE chicken coop, a green house, garden and many other out buildings for me. Best thing is the price is lower than the last one! We'll see how this goes.

Well, I had a few things quoted, but my computer is not wanting to coroperate and I can't remember what they were.

.

But Hi to everyone. I can't to see ya'll at the Monroe show!!!!

I think it's great that you took her when they called you. It's sad that she didn't make it, but she's lucky that she had you to care for her!

Omg. They could just be waiting til I fall asleep :gaah! (I hope my "GAAH!" smiley worked)

Chick Audie- you are funny

I've got one shell that's pipped here at the house- then it just stopped. Good grief- enough already, ya know?

Curiously, Mr Wiggly is an EE egg from my hens and the one that's pipped is it's twin. No sign of hatches or life from the eggs bought from the breeder yet. Tap, tap, Tapping foot!!

You asked about my "sprinkler fence". I made that before everyone had a computer in their house or digital cameras, but if I run across the pics in a photo album, will scan in and post. It was basically built like the dog kennel sections, except all PVC. Maybe this will make sense (or not?)

Each section was 4 to 6 foot long, and just over 4 foot tall. Picture an outside frame of pvc, then a giant "+" sign in the middle. Each section used one "+", four 90" elbows, and 4 "T"'s. For the sprinkler sections, I replaced a T with a joint that you could screw a hose on to. For "sprinkling:" I simply drilled holes thru the top section of fence, (which could be turned upside down to water from the bottoms also). Turn on hose and voila- water spraying out the holes . To keep the fence upright, I used those metal stakes and wired the panels to the stakes.

I just found a nice cage at Goodwill- it's 12" tall and 3 foot square, has a solid galvanized bottom with a 3" lip . Nice small and sturdy wire- maybe 1" squares. I think it will come in handy! BTW- they have a 3-day sale right now- all clothes you can stuff in a bag 50% off thru the weekend, in case anyone has kids growing out of clothes faster than the money tree can bear fruit (like me!).

Time for some organic popcorn- maybe the smell wafting out will encourage my little pipper to get motivated!

That sounds pretty neat, I can imagine how useful! Sounds like you don't still have it?

Thank you, I'll only shop there on 1/2 off days. With their prices anymore, it's hard to go there, unfortunately. I need to go, though, love finding fabric there. Have you read this "Refashionista" blog?

Enticing chickens with corn? Never... :0)
