Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Hi Neighbors! I've been stalking this board since Christmas time trying to learn as much as I can. I just wanted to introduce myself and say thanks for the wisdom.
I've got 4, 2 Americaunas (Duck, Bach - named by my daughters - who in their right mind names a chicken Duck?), a BO (Lucy) and a Black Australorp (Ethel). They are all around 7-10 weeks, and none have eaten from my hand yet. I have had them about 2 weeks.
I am learning as I go and so appreciate all you offer.
Just thought I should check in instead of always lurking around.

However, on a more positive note, a local feed store is having a giveaway on Facebook and the winner gets 6 chicks and a 10 lb bag of chick starter.

I need to have about 30 hens all together if I want to try to sell some of the eggs, so that would be awesome. I have 11 right now.

A bit of unsolicited advice, so take it for what it's worth.

Rather than just getting a bunch of random chicks, I'd suggest getting White Leghorns if you want to sell eggs. That is the breed with the highest feed-to-egg conversion ratio, which will make a huge positive impact on your profits in long run. Good luck!

I can't believe I caught up!

One of my other BA's started laying today! I came home on my lunch break to TWO brown eggs! So exciting!!!

I HAVE TO HAVE TO HAVE TO build my permanent coop this weekend, my poor little babes are way too big for the pen they've been in! And of course it's supposed to rain all weekend! I have no idea how I'm going to pull this off... I need some Harry Potter magic. I will post pics and my plans as soon as I have some.

FireWifeJess: I watched BD2 about 4x's this weekend! LOVE IT! The ending TOTALLY threw me off.

I CRIED when I saw Carlisle get killed. I was so infuriated!!!

But Jacob's little strip tease??? ooh la la!!! hehe!
I totally cried too!!! And when Jasper got killed. I was SO thankful that battle wasn't "real" ;) And yeah...Jacob is...erm....awesomesauce

Chickielady- unsure if you know, but if you are buying lots of GF products, such as Pamela's bread mix, you can get it WAY cheaper buying on Amazon. I just looked and the Pamela's bread mix is even on their "subscribe and save" program. I subscribe to many supplements and GF foods - and when they are ready to ship out the next batch they send you an e-mail in advance, in case you need to skip an order.

For instance: I was at Whole Foods last week and Bob's Red Mill certified GF oatmeal was $6.50 for the 2 lb bag.
Amazon has it for 1/2 that price- $15.12 for 4 of the 2 lb pkgs. ($3.80 per bag)

their Pamela's GF baking mix comes in various sizes- bulk, 19 oz size, etc- check it out!

I love, love, love paying $79.99 annually to have everything shipped to my door in 48 hours with NO shipping cost!!
The Amazon Prime movies and free Kindle downloads are just icing on the cake. (I downloaded a free kindle reader on my phone so can read anything offered on Kindle on my iphone...)

I think everyone who lives away from the big cities should have Amazon Prime !!
We also have Amazon Prime and love it to death! Saves me from needing Netflix for the kids, FREE shipping on almost everything and I have whatever I wanted in 2 days, and DUDE...for only $6.66 a month averaged, it's TOTALLY worth it for me not having to visit different stores with 3 kids in tow. I save on gas like crazy...and stress. And the prices on Amazon almost can't be beat!

Our first dozen eggs! All from Marie, the bantam EE. The bowl they're all in is tiny.
Very beautiful eggs!!

Lot's of Peeps up your way

Quote: Yes, my white Leghorn is the most reliable layer, smallest, friendliest, most confident chicken I have. She's wonderful. She's the leader but never ever mean to the other girls. <3 Love her. She's followed closely by my Redstar. I got a black star thinking she would be just as good a layer as the red star, and while she is a good layer, her eggs are so small! The redstars are huge and she is a medium small hen.
