Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

It looks to me in this pic, that they are cold, and huddled under a light bulb.
Hopefully you have the issue fixed !
G'night all
I will try to get on tomorrow.

In the picture was right after i put them in the crate. I have no doubt when i first took them out of the box they were cold. They sat in the post office from 6 am to 830 am. They do not instantly go hey it's warm in here so i'm warm. They take a bit to warm up.
Their brooder is 92 degrees. They are spread out now but hey whatever i think i've said that several times on here. Advice is only advice when ya use what you are told rather then basing it on when they first showed up. There is NOTHING i can do about the temps they were kept in at the post office. Nothing I do can undo whatever they did there.

Will anyone have EE, cochin, brahma or orpington hatching eggs at the Monroe show? And Sweetlilbaby good luck with your chicks. I lost some to shipping stress last year and that is one of the reasons I am going to try to hatch my own this year.

thanks. I know when they are shipped ya will loose some. I called and notified the poultry place they say if they die within 4 days of their hatch that they will refund for those chicks. but honestly I don't care if they refund or not i didnt notify them because of that, I notified them that the post office had them from 6 am and wouldn't let me get them til 830 am so maybe they can educate my post office on the importance of baby chicks getting to their new home to be kept warm.
PLUS they shipped them day before yesterday, they showed up here today that is 2 days of NO heat. I'm very surprised that the turkey poults are doing good. they are sensitive to cold and typically would be the first to die from a chill. I mean they are extremely temperature sensitive. But they are jumping and running around.
I'll take pictures of them later. Right now i'm sitting with my dogs trying to avoid going to look in the brooder to often because I know the babies are stressed from shipping still and want to stress them as little as possible.

I am going to the show, let me know what you want & I will bring it.
I will say that fertility has been GOOD but I will not say it has been 90% or better, too much cold weather.

I want some Dinosaur eggs. Aka Ko Shamo aka Dinero eggs. Oh and make sure ya lock yer coop when ya leave home!!! I may be makin the rounds! ROFL

Well, chicks are pretty hardy….and when shipped in numbers can usually survive ok since they huddle together. My thoughts is less the travel, but maybe they were the first to hatch of the group and were running out of their absorbable nutrients. They can usually be ok for 3 days but that seems to be the limit…... If you are able i would continue to dip their beak in electrolyte water or similar. good luck.

One died, the other two that are weak were completely limp gasping for air. So I broke off the tip of a toothpick, dipped it in honey and then rubbed that on their tongues. That was nearly an hour ago, they are now in a shoe box (with cloth in the bottom) with a heat pad under it standing up chirping. :)
I'm hoping that the one that died is the ONLY loss. I couldn't help that one as it was weak when i first opened the box and didn't think to give it honey right away for energy. I never thought that many they were the first to hatch and were running out of energy :(

It's going to be a long night for me because they have me so stressed worrying that the two weaker ones wont make it still. They are doing better but until they are completely healthy i'm going to stress about it.

Glad those two are looking better. I heard from someone who used to work at a wildlife rehab facility that they used flat cola (not diet) for birds in shock. The sugar plus caffiene would help perk them up enough to start eating on their own.

Looking forward to hatch day (Tuesday) first time for me... but also trying not to think about what could go wrong.

I wouldn't use it on new chicks but i have also 5 hr. energy if i am out of electrolytes. Emergen-C also works. Thanks for the tip of using honey…..Best of luck.

Could it be some breeds are more delicate or the quality of hatchery breeding stock? When I was following the hatchery threads last year, a lot of folks were losing their polish and faverolle chicks but the other breeds they ordered did ok. Are you going to the Monroe show Elizmartin? I would love to purchase some of your faverolle eggs
