I think everyone is getting the gardening bug! I want to start spinach, lettuce, and kale using "Winter Sowing" to get the earliest possible harvest started. I need to check my mint and see if it's coming up, that would be nice. I saw the chives are starting, always good to see. I keep quite a few herbs in the garden, especially the perennials like Rosemary, sage, oregano, thyme, tarragon. I'm getting better with cilantro, dill, and parsley. DH is in charge of the Basil, he loves making pesto and always goes overboard.
Of course we have to do the standards later.... tomatoes, pole beans, peas, cucumbers, zucchini and I'm starting to get into squash a little more every year. They take up so darn much room though. I don't have a lot of space. And I won't take out any of the berries to make room! LoL
Those suckers will eat ANYthing if they can't find something they like better! And commercial feed is at the very bottom of the list! The stuff they won't eat they just scratch to death I think. The ones that survived the scourge last year were the Nandina (aka heavenly bamboo) and the butterfly bush. I need to plant way more stuff in the area they get access to. Last year I was experimenting with ideas. We have a good sized apple tree in their fenced area. It has 3 varieties of apples that ripen at different times. They love the apples that drop off the tree!
Their absolute favorite snack is Kale. I don't think it's possible to grow enough kale that they won't eat it to the ground given half a chance.
My neighbor get deer in her yard fairly often so she built a really tall fence around a small garden area. They used the metal pipes used for electrical wires. They're about 10' tall and fairly inexpensive. Her hubby mounted them in big heavy concrete blocks, but I can't remember how. The the poles are moveable and will stay standing even with wind. They they put up plastic deer fencing, so the fence is at least 8' tall and works really well.
p.s. Battle Ground is south of Centralia. Google it if you need a better idea.
