Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

My stupid birds were eating the eucalyptus tree last year. I'm not sure they read the lists of things they won't eat.

I have potted grapes along the fence. They happily snack on the lower leaves and the plants give them shade in the summer

I need a green house... The wind tore up my little ones! DH said he'll build me one that won't blow over but he also said he'd fix the leaky faucet... I fixed it because I got tired of waiting! He's too busy! It's a nice thought but neither of us have time to build one or 2-5k for someone else to build it. I need to win the lottery something horrible!

check into the harbor frieght greenhouses... you can do it yourself even the modifications to make it awesome

No garden here. We have pesky deer and elk that will devour everything we plant. We can't even grow tulips or daffodils! And forget about fruit trees as well! We put up cage-fences around our baby trees and the deer just jumped on top of them and broke all the branches off the trees.

Chickens seem to be a solution to the problem...they can use the garden space and the deer don't bother them. LOL

Anyone want a suspected cockerel. He's a accidental half breed from Greenfire farms...half Ayem Cemani and something else. He's about 7 weeks old, loves to be handled and petted, very curious about everything I do BUT he picks on my 4 week old chicks and sometimes his sister (you may see her in the foreground.)
He's the black one with this white feather tipping and I have a feeling he's going to be super striking. I really like him but I've got 12 chicks and only want to keep a rooster if my Silkie or one of my Semana's turns out to be a rooster. There is a small small chance he could be a pullet but red comb and wattle already and none on his sissy.
I can deliver within 20 minutes or so of Battle Ground where I live.

ya we have deer here a herd that comes thru I ended up putting up some deer fencing around the garden area while I was waiting for my eggs to hatch it was a busy task to keep me from peeking into the incubator so much LOL... home depot has this garden fencing was 50 feet for like 7 bucks..I used tree stakles to use as my fencing post then stapled the garden fencing to that...I can go up another four feet on the tree stakes if I needed but so far has stopped the deer from eating my garden

I have a few raised beds. I've been learning what will grow well and what won't here. Peas, squash, and cabbage all did really well for me. I had issues with the brussels sprouts last year. I think it was the type I got in the 6 pack. I'm starting it from seed this year.

I need to plant more rhubarb this year. Horse radish is in a big tub right now and did really well last year.

The herbs have all done pretty good. The catmint is coming up right now. The catnip never fully died back. I thought I saw some peppermint coming up and will be moving a chunk this year.

Right now there is a pen of silkies cleaning out a garden bed for me. I'll be moving that pen in a few weeks.

I think everyone is getting the gardening bug! I want to start spinach, lettuce, and kale using "Winter Sowing" to get the earliest possible harvest started. I need to check my mint and see if it's coming up, that would be nice. I saw the chives are starting, always good to see. I keep quite a few herbs in the garden, especially the perennials like Rosemary, sage, oregano, thyme, tarragon. I'm getting better with cilantro, dill, and parsley. DH is in charge of the Basil, he loves making pesto and always goes overboard. :)

Of course we have to do the standards later.... tomatoes, pole beans, peas, cucumbers, zucchini and I'm starting to get into squash a little more every year. They take up so darn much room though. I don't have a lot of space. And I won't take out any of the berries to make room! LoL

Those suckers will eat ANYthing if they can't find something they like better! And commercial feed is at the very bottom of the list! The stuff they won't eat they just scratch to death I think. The ones that survived the scourge last year were the Nandina (aka heavenly bamboo) and the butterfly bush. I need to plant way more stuff in the area they get access to. Last year I was experimenting with ideas. We have a good sized apple tree in their fenced area. It has 3 varieties of apples that ripen at different times. They love the apples that drop off the tree!

Their absolute favorite snack is Kale. I don't think it's possible to grow enough kale that they won't eat it to the ground given half a chance.

My neighbor get deer in her yard fairly often so she built a really tall fence around a small garden area. They used the metal pipes used for electrical wires. They're about 10' tall and fairly inexpensive. Her hubby mounted them in big heavy concrete blocks, but I can't remember how. The the poles are moveable and will stay standing even with wind. They they put up plastic deer fencing, so the fence is at least 8' tall and works really well.

p.s. Battle Ground is south of Centralia. Google it if you need a better idea.

kewl..yeah this fence is only about 5 feet tall........but it is edged on all sides by a very very steep slope..........so I dont forsee them jumping it either going up or down it.......least so far it has worked and they were visiting pretty often until I put the fencing up...had started munching my wintering strawberrys tops and had gotten my late berry crop.......and I had a case of apples I had stuck out by there to stay cool with the cold weather..they were using it as their snack bin..but all that stopped once I got the fence up.......smart idea for the electrical conduit pipe..that works great for cold frame building or tunnel greenhouse as well.....
