Thanks everyone. Yes the bear has attacked before, during the summer. Now I really need my little Silkie eggs in the incubator to hatch! It'll be day 7 tomorrow but I found 2 more eggs in the coop. Anyone ever do a staggered hatch? I only have one incubator but am considering putting these 2 eggs in too. When the existing eggs go into lockdown will the high humidity hurt these last 2?

Broodies will collect over time and they all hatch about the same time, but they also rotate newer eggs toward the center and older out toward the edge to change the heat applied therefore changing the hatch date. I would experiment with the idea, but maybe not in such a needy time. If you have a broody, let her hatch them then maybe integrate with the other hatchlings?

No broodies... Not even the lone Silkie hen that survived is acting broody.

So it turns out the bear must have taken her for a ride too because we found her on the other side of our property, and she has a small wound near her butt. I bathed and dried her and now she's hanging out with my 2 week old chicks in the brooder.

I've done it plenty of times with good results. It's worth a try since it's your last couple eggs. Give them a chance if you can.

Thanks Catface. I did put them in earlier. Here's hoping all goes well. Did you have to do anything special to them while your other eggs were in lockdown?

The chicks hatched in a moving egg turner?

They sure do. Strong, healthy chicks tend to hatch in some pretty strange environments. I've had some hatch with no turner at all the entire time and I've heard of eggs hatching in warm weather in a barn with no hen or incubator. Nature seems to take care of it pretty well

That's encouraging, I would have thought that they might get stuck between the slats and get hurt.
