Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Get hens and there really isn't a problem. My silkie boys are quieter than the large fowl ameraucana boys, but their crows are more piercing.

My husband doesn't really care how many birds I have as long as I take care of them. He does say NO to certain breeds, though, and doesn't really care for bantams. I've threatened to get showgirls a few times just because I know how much he hates the look of their necks. I bet if I got partridge, he'd never even know since well, they are still silkies.

Single comb chickens in winter - do I need a heat lamp in the coop? I live on Camano Island. I think our average overnight low in January low is 34, but of course it can get much colder sometimes. How cold can they tolerate without developing frostbite?

At those temps, it's moisture what you need to be concerned about, not the temperature. Make sure the coops is very well ventilated above roosting height.

If you decide to get showgirls I can isolate my showgirl roo with my silkie to get you some eggs, lol. My husband also hates his neck, but I think he is cuuute!

My New Hampshires have done just fine down to 8 degrees without heat. Plenty of ventilation and no drafts in the coop they are in. We loose power to often for me to even consider having a heat lamp on anything other chicks that aren't under broodies. Even for chicks I switched to one of the Brinsea brooders a couple years ago, so they are off it pretty quick compared to a heat lamp. It really doesn't get cold enough to cause issues in this area.
