It's probably wise to not swap chicken duties with another keeper this year. All it takes is tracking Avian flu in on your shoe to the flock.

I just got back from a 3 day vacation (first proper vacation since we got chickens 6 years ago) and as a precaution we did NOT have my neighbor come over to check on the chickens. She has no animals but since we live in an area with a lot of water, we do attract ducks, and I didn't want her to step in infected duck poop on the way over.

I put out 2 extra pie pans of feed and topped off the waterer and trusted the auto door to do the job. The chickens did fine, still had plenty of food and water left, and we came back to a good amount of eggs and a broody sitting on them haha.

Today's adventure. My neighbor and I have been trying to keep my girls out of their backyard, where he feeds birds. No waterfowl, but just to be cautious. My 2 ISAs have been sneaking over there somehow, even after we erecting some fencing. Finally figured out where ( huckleberry and salal brush border out property line ) they were getting through. Haven't had any more messages since blocking off the whole side.

Pullets did a bad thing today. Perched in the peach tree and started pecking off the new peaches. Not to mention the deer that have been eating anything they can reach. Any hostas growing near the fencing have been pecked. Don't you just love farm life? How are your fruit setting? Ours seem sparse this year. Too cold and wet.

Nothing on the apple trees. I need to go look and see of the plums set. They did blossom l.

The native pacific crabapples will have a bumper crops. They are blooming right now. So I may get 6 pints of jelly out of the trees by the drive. More if I use the ladder. Need hubby out there for that. They are so tiny even though they grow in clusters. Half inch on average. They make a nice jelly but don't really taste like european apples of any sort.

I had lots of cherries set but the doggone gray squirrel plucks the branch tips!

I have a huge crab apple tree in the chicken yard.
Heard you could make a jam of them but have not tried.

Hi everyone! It has been a LONG time since I have been on this thread. I knew it was pretty quite for a while. Not much goin on in my neck of the woods. getting a lot of rain which is uncommon. Usually by this time it is in the high 70's but it is barely making it to the high 60's. Garden should do well. Did a bunch of hatching this year. Actually documenting my serama hatch.. here is the link if anyone is interested.
