Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Mom used a few long soaks in a heavy dose of oxyclean to get smoke staining and other stuff out of a white antique lace bedspread from a great aunt. Everyone else in family were just going to toss it.

Mom has a large top load washer so filled and let it soak 30 min. Water was pretty black. Drain and rinse on delicate. I think she did it 3 times before the water was fairly clear. Then it had a short delicate cycle with woolite to wash.

Now everyone else is kicking themselves because it looks great.

They also had given up on the canning jars from grandmother because they couldn't open them. Mom took them and gave them to me. I'll never forget her startled look when I popped the bail right open. Some elbow grease to get rid of stains and rust since the jars had been outside. I ordered some rubbers and use them for dry goods and display.

Thanks for the suggestions! It was made by my great-great-grandmother (died 1942) for my great grandfather, who passed away in 1958. So I have no idea of exactly when it was pieced together. Maybe it was a wedding gift?

I guess it's not in bad shape, but the light colored field is just kind of dingy overall, with a few darker brown discolorations sprinkled around. I really wouldn't feel comfortable putting it in a washing machine for fear of damaging it. I believe I will pass it down to my little granddaughter someday. I gave my daughter in law the wedding ring quilt my mom made for me and the ex.

I'll probably just do nothing for now,
other than make sure it's stored correctly.

Here's the quilt in question. It's kind of a cool pattern. Not sure if it has a name.

I think some museums use this method. All I know is I've seen some British one use this for conservation cleaning on an ancient blanket. Soapwort is the gentlest cleaner and is grown just for museums for the purpose.

The fabric is placed on an undyed cloth and rolled up. Then water that soapwort has been soaking in is used to carefully soak the roll. It's rolled back and forth gently on a lipped table to wash. Then it's rinsed. After they unroll the item is carefully rolled and placed on a new clean and dry cloth to roll and soak water out. Then repeat until all that's coming out is out.

For something like your quilt, I'd fill up the tub with water and soap and add the quilt. Climb in barefoot and gently step the water through it thoroughly. Drain and fill to step rinse. Let sit until enough water comes out that you can actually lift the thing. Drying outdoors out of the sun would be best. So might want to wait until next summer.

A small water trough and a bucket hand washer (looks like a plunger but hard plastic with baffles) would work good.

After the past few days the girls have been stuck in the chicken run since it has been raining they are now out in the yard doing what they do best looking for bugs!! This is the 1st time I have seen Salt and Pepper (my youngest's chickens) in the yard with the older girls. Eggs are very few since like 1 or 2 a day. The older girls are molting we have feathers everywhere!!!
