Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I think we are gonna lose one of our girls she not looking to good. I went out to feed them this morning and she was missing... I found her still in the coop on the roosting bar. so i reached in and grabbed her and was shocked to see how big her belly is!!!! and squishy!! pretty sure it's water belly. when I pushed on her belly yellowish poo and water came out her vent. should I just let her stay in the coop or should I separate her from the rest? I don't think she has eaten today or been drinking since she don't want to come out of the coop.

I can't separate sometimes so unless it's contagious, I leave them where they are comfortable.

Hope you didn't loose a roof or tarp.

Mine tarps are super tight so wind doesn't damage them. Rarely an old zip tie snaps but that's a quick fix. This is year 4 on the roof tarps over the pens. Think I actually need to replace the top tarps this year. Sun damage is very slowly catching up. The tarp over the tiny broody pen is pretty done after 6 months. I need to change the roof system. A hog panel will just fit and allow me to make the tarp tight.
I had a tarp over my alpaca shelter becuse its not done and it fell off so i have to fix it but other then that no damige and all my animals are okay

As far as I know ascites is not contagious, so you can leave her where she is. But you can treat it. I did with one of my chickens and it extended her life, but she did die in the end, and I think they all do, because it's a secondary condition. Here is an article on it if you do want to treat it.

On a brighter note made Cowboy pickled eggs. Made just a small batch wanted to try them out. The girls are given us about 6-7 eggs a day now not bad since 1 girl RIR BigRed is now almost 5 years old. (oh I have 11 girls by the way) I think she maybe done laying but I do catch her in the coop tryen to sit on everyone's else's eggs lol she don't stay long. If i find her in there i just let her be and about an hour later she's done and doesn't go back in until the next day. I know I have 2 that are not laying Pepper that is sick and BigRed so not bad 9 laying hens and 6-7 eggs a day is more then enough for us.

I bet those'll be good. Cowboy eggs with pickled jalapeno and garlic on the side.

Recipy? for the cowboy picked eggs They sound cool to try out
here is the one I used never did them before so just a test run
:)

Ingredients
  • 8-10 hard-boiled eggs for 1-quart wide-mouth jar
  • OR 8 hard-boiled eggs divided between 2 pint wide-mouth jar
  • 2 cups Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 1 cup White Sugar
  • 1 cup Brown Sugar
  • 1 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 3-4 cloves of Fresh Garlic
  • 1 tsp Ground Tumeric
  • 1/2 tsp Cayenne Pepper
  • 1 cup Sliced Jalapenos ( I got the 2" Jalapenos so only used 2 peppers)
  • I added 2 green onions but did not cook them just washed them and sliced them and added to the jar
Instructions
1. The first step is to hard-boil the eggs.
2. Slice the jalapenos peppers about 1/4 inch thick. You can leave the seeds in if you want more heat if not remove them.

3. Prepare the pickling brine by adding the vinegar, sugars, seasonings and jalapenos to a saucepan and heat until sugars are dissolved and the jalapenos are tender.

4. Place the eggs in the jar and use a slotted spoon to layer with the jalapenos.
5. Pour the brine over the eggs to fill the jar up to 1/4 inch headspace.
6. Let sit for 30 minutes before adding the lid.
7. When the eggs cool to room temperature place in the refrigerator.

8. Pickled eggs last 3 to 4 months in the refrigerator.

Note best to wait at least 3 days before trying even better 2 or 3 weeks later
:)
