I still don't understand why we had to change!! I hate change!!!
It is our REWARD for being the #1 State thread. So they have given us a brand new shiney thread to decorate on our own. Lets show em how nicely and how fast we can furnish it with lots of fun posts !! !

NO PROBLEM!! LOL!! It's cool!

CarolynF: In the other WA thread I tried to quote you there then post it here but it wouldn't let me. You mentioned that you have a wood floor in your coop. Is that it? You don't need any bedding for them on top of the wood floor? (Please note: I'm not being snotty, I'm a newbie to the world of chickens and am asking b/c I'm curious and wanna learn more)

I have a dirt floor and I'm doing the DL method for now but am definitely wanting to learn more about other options in case this one doesn't work for me. I have a big coop and just want something that will work nicely and not need a lot of time and effort daily.
I've thought about using sand, that seems like it would be really easy to keep clean, easy to scoop poo. Just not sure how easy it would be to keep dry b/c when it gets wet, it clumps up which I would think would make it hard to get it to dry quickly. When the shavings get wet, I just rake and fluff, they dry pretty quickly. I'm also not sure if a sand floor would help much in keeping the birds warm enough?
I have also thought of putting in a wood floor but to me, that seems like it would be really hard to keep clean. I see what happens on the roosts w/the poo and it just smashes and smears all over, I'm pretty sure the wood floor would do the same thing? It seems like you'd never really be able to clean it very well. What are your experiences with this?

Hi Nikki99,
We were discussing using sand in the coop, I was just talking about what's under the sand. :) A few posts earlier I showed a picture of my small coop during construction, it's elevated about 3 feet and very easy for me to reach inside. You're right about wet sand, a real no-no. When poop mixes with wet sand it gets to be like cement, very smelly cement! My girls are inside just to lay eggs and roost and it's very dry and well ventilated so it's super easy and clean. Keep reading and asking questions, it's a great process. I've learned so much in the last year!

Hi guys !
Sorry I am late but been sick...darn it.
But I am here now !!

:frow

Hope you're feeling better; I've been fighting bronchitus for the last month but the rain has cured it.

x2!! where ya been sister??  Hope your getting better??

I'm doing a lot better, but this spring and summer have been rough in many ways.

I'm feeling bummed at the moment because a raise my son was told he'd be getting in February and then, "oh, no, you'll get it at the end of your first year of employment," has now been delayed until "well, we really meant January of the year after you're first full year of employment."

So much for him getting his own car. Wish we had some way to help him.

In other news: I'm not slaughtering roosters today, since the woman who was the co-harvester and recipient got hung up on a client call until way late.

I'm here too!!!

At least it looks like I only have 13 pages to catch up on now if I ignore the old thread.....
Been busy studying for the business section of the Enrolled Agent exam - it will likely be close to December before I am again as active as I had once been.

Wow, when that rian started, I went from getting an average of 12 eggs per day from 24 hens (of which most are molting) to only 3-5 eggs per day.
It's pretty funny watching them - they still want to be let out into the yard, but they run across the grass and hang out under the eves of my house with my 2 big dogs. I have to hose off the chicken poop from the door matt twice a day! I guess even the dogs have eaten their fill of chicken poop. They hardly touch their dogg food anymore!

from the dogs' perspective)

I wish I had a video camera on the hens earlier today. One of my Barnie's who is going through a particularly unattrative molt decided to make a run for it back to the coop during a brief break in the rain and winds. She was only half-way across a distance of only 20 feet when a huge gust of wind came and blew off many of her remaining feathers like an autum tree! She barely managed to stand her gound, and then went indignantly squaking away to the coop since she had just been stripped in public!

Well this is weird, but good I guess,
I'm listening to the Prosser/ East Valley game, my nephew plays for Prosser, Prosser's on top, but for some reason, I'm getting break up, last week I didn't?

Sometimes I hate going to You Tube and look up stuff, I wanted to see how they caponize a Cockerel and unfortunately I read some of the ignorant comments from people! I got into it with one chick, she was cussing at the guy that was in the video, and I told her, I found it interesting that a custom that has been around for literally CENTURIES is now considered "animal abuse"
and that just because people don't know where there food comes from or really even care, make ignorant comments instead of learning where and how their food is grown and raised!! I told her I thought that fighting roosters and dogs was heinous and stupid, but people are still doing it!!! Anyway, I did come back and told her WHY they do it and it's purpose, and she came back and said thanks for telling her, I just said, I don't have a problem explaining why people do those things, I just don't think it was appropriate to cuss at the guy when you don't even know what he's doing??
I really shouldn't even go there, cause there are tons of ignorant people that make ignorant comments!!

Just a suggestion for future cases like this. I think it would be easier for Users if old posts could simply be archived or moved, keeping maybe the most recent 6 months as-is. IMHO

Hahaha... don't worry, the dust will settle and you'll love your new home! Reminds me when we moved from our last place (an inlaw setup at my wife's grandparent's house) into our new place (an inlaw setup at my parent's house) and we were able to move very very slowly... so much so that we kinda lived in both places for a few weeks trading off where we slept. The biggest problem: We weren't forced to get rid of all our stuff in one big move.

I'm sorry you feel this way, but this definitely isn't our first time doing this and while it's not comfortable for people who don't like change, it isn't nearly as bad as some may think. Using your analogy of moving a family: It's more like moving the family to the house next door and when visitors come to the house, there is a teleporter that easily and effortlessly takes them to the new house. Even better, all their old stuff is organized nicely and cleanly in a spare bedroom and SUPER easy to access, so anybody who wants to rummage through it can do so without any problems at all.

Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy!

It's not really any different to look for 6 month old stuff in this thread vs. the old thread. Both are, and will continue to be super easily accessible and searchable.

Yup, that's absolutely what we'll do! I've already updated the first post in that thread and then once it is closed, the last post will have a link to here as well.

Again, this isn't our first rodeo. We have a LOT of experience with this stuff and have gone through this process before without too much of an issue. Give it a few weeks and if you still think it was a horrible thing to do and will cause Washinton to fall into the ocean, let me know and I'll see what I can do to resolve the concerns.

Nifty Chicken:
I'm sorry you feel that a very simple and polite suggestion for something to think about in the future is so upsetting and needs so many belittling remarks.
