Justbugged thought it might be nettle, too, but it doesn't sting. No hairs on the stem or leaves. It has an herbal smell to the leaves. I'd like to know what it is, since a whole bunch are coming up in the front flower bed! If you are still interested in cedars, I can dig a bunch up and pot them. If I don't have the chance to do a road trip some time, maybe someone else who is heading over there from Seattle could take them? How many would you like?

I think I have that growing here too, and always steer clear of it cuz it does look so much like a Nettle....
I have alot of Holly, complete with berries.
It is an envasive species here...and we have several about 12 feet tall we have got to cut down & get rid of.

I would love to add more layers, I love the look of the Marans and their eggs, but I've hit my limit (according to DH) until we move to our forever home. I do know Cochins are not good layers, I just didn't want spazoid birds to start out with, and they were recommended as a friendly breed. Come spring I should have 9 Cochins, 5 Brahmas and the 5 from you all laying.

Sounds like everyone got some great goodies, had some fun times with friends, and saw some amazing birds yesterday! I am glad I got to see the chickens at the Puyallup Fair this year and bummed about missing this one, but hoping I can go in 2013 to the Monroe show.

I'm home this morning with a killer headache. Just folding laundry and keeping the fire going while the family goes to church. I think my headache has been getting worse over the past couple days because I've had gluten. Seems to be one of the many side affects of me returning to gluten in my diet, so once again it's OUT.

I now have all the cedars. So my plan is to put them into nursery pots, and winter them over. I will get them to you in March. The last plant pictured isn't nettle. My first reaction to the plant when I saw it, was "that's a nettle". But it's not, and it smells like an herb. I am going to have to do a little research on the plant.

I would love to have a holly tree start. I have a holly tree, that came up after they bull dosed the original tree. But the the tree doesn't produce berries. I believe that holly trees are male and female. So I guess I need to look up what the difference is, so that I really know what I am talking about.

I will try to save you a holly start.
Surely there is hordes here and they should be easy enough to spot this time of year.

I am a wee bit worried about the weather, the news heads are saying up to 100 mph winds here on the coast................we are as ready as we will ever be, still I worry about the giant tarp ripping off the house and sailing away~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

We had lightening a few times last night wake us up.....now we are both a bit tired.............(yawn!!!!!!!!!)

Every time you talk about major storms, we get practically nothing here! Must be some kinda weather black hole you live in out there! Sorry about the worries though, I'd hate that. When will you get a roof on the house?

Cochins are a friendly breed, and beautiful too.
I had some (along with Light Brahmas) and all was well til we moved here in this sticky slippery clay soil.
ALL my Cochins and Brahmas ended up with swinging dingle berries of clay...and the dingle berries got bigger everyday.............til I was forced to clip all shank & feet feathers to rid the birds of clacking dingle balls.

We are right ON the Willapa River, a mile from Willapa Bay, not too far North of Astoria.
So yes we get the brunt of all Pacific Storms.
The only time we do not get hit hard, is when a system goes north of us, through BC & into Everett.
They get hit hard there too !
So does Forks and most places on the coast with no protection from the Olympic Mountains.

It took great restraint to not come home with white La Fleche chicks. My husband being there probablly made a difference, too. Husbands are like that.

I am glad I did not linger around the chicks...I would so love Black La Fletch...not as fond of the whites though.....Love Black La Fletch !
