OK, Home made bator pics for Rainwolf:
The bator on the kitchen counter in lockdown, so the turners have been taken out:
and again
It is ugly, but works great...
close up of the top, an old TV tray..metal and bolted to the underside is a brand new brooder element, complte replacement with wafer, etc...
if you look under the TV tray, this is the big element, 650 watts !
turner paddles DH made, on the bed, removed as the bator was in lockdown, eggs in the bator laying on their sides.
close up with an egg to show...
the handles stick out of the holes cut into the cabinet, so you walk by and turn every so often all the way left, and then all the way right.
The brooder element is a replacement part for a big commercial brooder like at feed stores, the ones that are stacked so high...and costs about $90 I think, used to be $75, but that is the cost of insurance there.
Has 2 lights sockets, one goes on and off as the element heats, the other can be any color, I sometimes use red as it keeps babies from pecking and stays on 24/7.
Plexiglass in front allows me to see in, a door cut in the front for access...
I now put all eggs in lockdown in paper egg cartons, I believe it is easier for the babies to peck out when the egg stays still, otherwise they roll all over and it is supposed to help them go up for the air cell.
If they were laying down and rolling it can supposibly disorient them into not knowing which way is up and unable to pip to the air cell, resulting in drowning.
In the photos you can see the irriagation tubing to add water to the sponge, and several thermometers.
I have several thermometers and they always all say something alittle different.
OK..there is the old homemade, first home made bator.
I am soooo tired.
*******OK I popped back in to add:: The little fan you see mounted on the top (the underside of ) the TV tray is a computer fan from Radio Shack...DH drilled a hole in the TV tray and poked the fan knob trough and bolted down...it is a variable speed fan and works excellent !!!!!!!!***************
