I would prolly stick with cat food--dry or canned, 'cause it's higher in protein.. Dry food is going to have more carbs, the canned has more protein.... If you soak dry food in milk--whole milk would be the yummiest I would imagine? But you aren't meaning for their entire diet right? just as treat or as extra? Small kibble cat food wouldn't be a problem I don't think--as long as it's scattered? Mine like dry kitten food--I put it in the duck pool for treats on occasion and like right now, with it being so cold, I give them canned kitten food pretty regularly. When you do the flax and rice bran--how are you feeding it? And the kelp you get, is the same for feeding as for making fertilizer? Where is Wilco? Since I am not far from Puyallup, I would totally be happy to pick some up for you, and bring it out here to Fircrest? Save you a few miles anyway
Maybe I'll try some soaked dry cat food if the fertilzer supply house doesn't have fish meal. Usuallt when I buy the organic fertilizer ingredients they are pure, no additives. probably not human food grade but fine for the animals. I had just read about the rice bran for the chickens so havn't tried it on the chickens yet. It's high in fat and great for coats (horses) so assume it would help with feathers and underweight chickens that need a boost. The kelp and flax (you can get that in 50# sacks also at the feed store. Dells has it sometimes but last time I had to order it) I usually add about 1/4 cup of either or bothe to a 20 to 30 lb feeder. I'm not very scientific about it but you don't need much kelp. If I used the rice bran I would start with 1 cup for the same size feeders. I know how to get to Wilco but can't remember streets. I do know I take river road to Meridian and make a left. Go over the train trussles and make a left on that main street you come to after you pass the freeway entrances. Go down a ways and it's on the left. it's in with a bunch of baby diarrhea yellow colored industrial buildings. Easy to miss cause they have a small sign. Thanks for the offer of picking it up but I need to make a run over there and Wilbur Ellis anyway to get all my fertilizer for the year and it's a truck full!
lol! yeh.. probably wouldn't all fit in the back of the jeep would it? that would be a sight. This is good info.. I am always looking for healthy snack stuff for the chickens, to help their feathers and stuff... One of the call breeders back east/midwest uses kelp with his ducks to help with fertility and hatch rate.. I am very curious to try it with mine.
Thanks for the information!
if you think about it, let me know when you are over this way.. if it works for both of us, it would be fun to meet for a quick cup of coffee or something in the area!
edited for my extraordinary typing skills...
