WOO! Another cutie! He's all black with yellow just around his eyes. What's that gonna be? Tuxedo?

These quail are sure finicky. When I've hatched chicks they were on time and hatched at about the same time. So weird how one little guy hatches and hours later nobody else has:confused:

If he looks black with yellow eye brows its a dark range. he/she will be very dark "chocolate/mahogany" colored.

and yes they take a little adjusting to get them to hatch just right. Dunno maybe its the quail voodoo dance that makes em hatch

Hehehe no worries I woke up this morning to 13 in the incubator! All are happy and fluffy now

I floated just a few that hadn't hatched yet and they're still viable! Its day 20 now! Late little buggers. You said still air should be about 102 right?

I'd keep them separate. I don't mix birds that go "peep" with birds that go "cluck". Right now I have my walk-in divided into 2 coops, and only chicken wire separates my peepers and my cluckers. I figure that when they are old enough to mingle, they will already be used to one another.

Last year I had a 8 week age difference between my 2 groups of chicks. I often kept their tractors next to each other, and if the weather was nice, I'd let one goup free-range. When they were about 13 and 20 weeks, a dog killed one of the free birds, and the others were clamoring to get into the run with the younger chickens. I let them in, and both groups were fine with each other.

Had my first hawk incident today. After that bobcat and my reinforcing of the fence, I and telling by production increase, my girls have been feeling much safer. . . . Until today a hawk decided to actually fly down to about 15 ft off the ground, circling the flock in the pasture. The girls were already starting to run, but luckily they respond very well to my calls - I immediately let out a loud, high pitched shriek, over and over, and ALL the girls went barreling into their coop. After that, I stalked the hawk as it flew over the Tolbunt pen, and shrieked at it. After it left, I stood guard over the area for about an hour, then finally decided it's time to make my pasture tacky looking. . . . And string up some CD's.

I've now got two long wires filled with CD's, one going East-West on the western corner of the main pasture, and another North-South on the Northern end of the main pasture. From what I hear, this should keep the hawks away at least 50 yards.

So far so good.

I must really say, I love how my girls respond to my calls so well. While setting up the hawk-deterrent, I thought I saw the hawk coming back, so I let out a quick warning call, EVERYONE went running for it, but since my call was so short, most of them stopped just before they got into the coop, looked around, then waited to make sure all was okay, and came back out.
