I have an egg eater
sad.png
I found an egg that was cracked and smushed like it was soft shell. Then I went back later to collect the eggs and one of them was missing. found remains of yoke in the nest box.

I guess I will have to start watching and collect them as soon as they are laid.

Sounds like Kaneke may be offering up a relay !!!

It sounded like the person with the very loud chickens lives about 10 minutes away from me. If we could decide on a day I might be able to get them a little further south. Sunday might work for me. DH and I were thinking of going to Yelm to the casino, but we could take a side trip.

ok -- DS and DGD are on their way to Snohomish to spend night with "d*" xH .... then back to Kennewick tomorrow

Dana, that sounds like a great start to the "relay" -- I can go basically any day, could meet you at the Red Wind casino (about 7 miles from my place, I'm on the north-east side of Yelm near Stewarts Meats)

Toni could meet us there too, the casino is considerably closer to I-5 than I am

or -- I could meet you there, get the noisy hens (I have a large size VariKennel that fits our lab/shep mix, also have quilts to throw over to quiet things a bit

then meet Toni back here at my place, if she wants to come down the back road through Graham thence west to McKenna

my hens sing the egg song pretty loudly but neighbors say they don't mind it, so I could keep the noisy hens here for a day or so if Toni can't come down same day you do ... they won't like being "so cooped up" but I have enough room (a bit over an acre) to keep them well away from my flock

Rob is taking araucanas and ducks and I, of course, have my superior Polish with which to trounce you all. Well, actually I had to look through every bird I had to find 4 with tails- (See the amazing crested araucanas- gotta love molting season) but I always HOPE to do a little trouncing.

it's 84* here in the loft but that's INSIDE a well insulated house, in the shade of oak trees .... a lot warmer out on the deck, south side of house

coop may be the coolest place here, also slightly insulated, but has the taller crate east and south of it, so doesn't get any sun until noon, then it's filtered shade really, with the big oak tree hanging over, the tall house to the south and west of it, and a cool draft coming out of the basement ramp, dug 4 feet into the ground

DGD Hailey just LOVED the pink egg ... she had fun playing with chickens all over the yard, throwing whole wheat bread crusts and sunflower seeds for them ... but when came time to go eat, we could find only FIVE hens and the rooster ... Anitra was missing

after considerable searching, we decided the tummy rumblings were getting too loud, so we went off to stuff ourselves with Mexican at Puerta Vallarta here in town

got back a bit ago .... to find Anitra hanging out right outside the run, AND apparently another "first time" egg in a nest box that hadn't been used before --- stuffed-green-olives olive color, and considerably more pointed at the ends than any other egg that had shown up so far

ok -- so I'm taking the plastic recycle bin out of the run ... no one has used it to lay an egg --- or --- maybe I'll put another one on top of it, dump the glass recycling that's occupying it, into the third bin we have which is only half full -- I have a bunch more paper to run through the shredder now anyway

it's too hot -- I misunderstood what CR was posting --- beauty is in the eye of the beholder and my granddaughter tells me that my rooster is NOT boring, he is much prettier than the chickens at the farm where her class went on a field trip

so yes, I agree with CR that there are other chickens, not crested, tufted, frizzled, nor silkied --- which we don't see as "boring" either

now yes, my EE hens are all slight variants of the common partridge sort of plumage -- but if you look at the individual feathers, you find a wondrous variety

One of the three sings the egg song. But together, they like to *sing* in the mornings to clear their lungs for the day.

Anyway you all work it would be great. I have a month old son to watch, so getting out of the house for long periods of time is hard. (So many thanks in advance!)
