#1 .. give them a 2x4 as a roost to perch upon (in the warmest part of the brooder area)
#2 .. use an old ice cube tray as the food dish, with the divider still in it ... or use a surplus wild-bird feeder, so they have to lean in to get the food, and are separated rather than massed

(second option is actually better, as it gets it off the floor so they can't kick stuff into it or perch on it and poo)

I have a divided, covered chick tray I could bring down tomorrow. I just need to remember to run it through the dish washer.

No need, I have one I got at Del's the other day, it's just that I have been trying to catch up on other things (with Stewie creating chaos behind me as I go in the house) and they still have their tiny learner's plate.

I think a chicken does not care if it costs $30 or $30000...they are still going to poop on/in it.

It is nice though...but too spendy for me.

He expects to get that for that? It isn't even insulated!

I bet that having it insulated would cost at least another 500.00.

It does makes me feel a lot better about spending 800.00 on my coop and run.

Smart chickens? Isn't that an oxymoron?

Yesterday, I went out to the backyard because there was a big commotion going on. Dolly had gotten herself to the wrong side of the fence, and couldn't figure out how to get back. Everyone on this side of the fence was alarmed for her. Fortunately, she wasn't too hard to catch, but I need to figure out how she got out.

Isn't it sweet when the rest of the flock is so concerned for the wayward one? I've seen that demonstrated here in different ways too. Just makes me love them that much more.

This reminded me of a chicken and oatmeal story.
Many years ago when my DH was a boy, his family had hens, and his mother started to feel bad that the hens might be cold. So she started feeding them cooked oatmeal every morning. Then the hens stopped laying, so they had DH's Grand-dad butcher the hens, because the hens had gotten to fat to lay. This story was told for years, about how feeding the hens oatmeal had made them fat, and why the hens had stopped laying.

It wasn't until about a year ago, when I stopped and thought about the story again, that I realized that the hens quit laying because of the lack of daylight hours, and that it never had anything to do with the hens being fed oatmeal. It's funny how much denial there was when I mentioned the detail about the light.

As it turned out everyone in their family, had become really tired of taking care of the chickens, and they really just didn't want them anymore. But they think it sounds better to blame the oatmeal.

It's nice to know that I am not the only person to miss the comma.

I think it would be very sad to have slow chickens. I wonder if the poor little slow chicken would get picked by the smarter and faster chickens?

Are you sure it shouldn't be a colon or semi colon?

I am sure you are right. It's all I can do to get all the words written, let alone the punctuation done correctly. At least I know which to,too, two, to use most of the time.

I really glad that you weren't able to make it this year. You did just remind me that my Uncle is big into the air shows. I haven't talked to any of my family for the past year or so, so now I need to make sure if he is okay. I am fairly sure that I would have been told if he was among the dead. But given that Uncle Gene lives in Central California, and has owned airfields in that area, he may have been there in Reno. I will check this out asap.

Homer the Ameraucana rooster went to auction this morning. He had gotten much better at crowing. I have to say that I didn't know that rooster's could roll their r's. He managed to add that to the last note of his crow just this morning. If he could have just learned to sleep in on the weekends. I might have been willing to let him stay awhile longer. But this morning it was barely light, when he started in with the crowing. So DH rounded him up and took him off to the auction. I am going to miss Homer a little bit.

Here's the man. He's half Mottled Houdan, half Gold Laced Polish. And boy does he crow a LOT.

He's only 5 months old and probably weighs more than my Tolbunt Polish boys.
