I have really wanted to have a Tarantula. I wanted a very nice fluffy one with very nice markings on it. Then I learned that they can live about 30 years. I am certain that I do not have the attention span to be able to care for any pet for 39 years, So alas I have no big hairy tarantula at my house. I wanted them to be like Diana the stick bug that lived for a year. Oh well it's probably for the best.
I do have ordinary spiders at my house. They can be really cool too have until they try to get in bed with me, then it's lights out for the spider.
Thank you Russ for the hug. I needed that after yesterday.
You are correct in that it is an arachnid but not a spider. It is called an amblypygid. They are the greatest lil things. They may look like death on eight spiky legs, but they are totally harmless. No venom, and they don't bite or use those fangs. I have some truly freaky pics of them, which you are welcome to request for me to put up, but they are about as threatening as a baby bunny. They are so fragile that with the exception of the largest species in the world, they almost never fight back. Wonderful lil things. I think I like them better than tarantulas. I hope to get permits to bring some back from Panama the next time I go down; I have done some work on their social behavior and intraspecific interactions.
Justbugged, I am mating Avicularia versicolor, just google image that
. Or I might just put up some fluffy wuffy pictures of my own. Pretty, fluffy, non-bitey, but they are fast and jumpers. Arboreals typically live much shorter lives than terrestrials, and they go about 10 years or so. I can let you know if I hatch out any babies.
I think the prettiest tarantula is Poecilotheria metallica. [You might need some sunglasses for looking at good pictures of those online, the colors!] Those are not for beginners though! When I have money, I will be getting one.
They are gorgeous!!! I'm just not a "spider person". I don't think I could bring myself to pick them up. I know that's silly - I used to breed and keep snakes. It just gives me chills to watch a spider walk.
I'm getting some eggs shipped and I am seeing that there are problems getting them to chicks/ducklings because of air sac rupturing issues during shipping. Does anyone know of someone selling fertile mallard eggs in W Wa? If I could just pick some up it would probably be a lot better.
OK Snipes those are some really pretty tarantulas. I was quite taken with the Panama Blond and the Venezuelan Suntigers. I am still thinking that 10 years is a little more of a commitment than I am willing to take on for a caged pet.
I still have the dog that was not supposed to live for more than 10 years, he is now over 11 years and in very good health. I tend to feed the best food we can afford, but I try to limit the amount of live food that I buy for pets. I totally draw a line a live food that can escape into the house like crickets. Things that can jump out of a food bowl and take up living with me are forbidden in my house at this time.
I have 3 African Butterfly fish that are supposed to eat live crickets. I have no problem catching an occasional fly or or errant spider for them to lunch on, but the first butterfly fish was really dumb about food and the entertainment value and need just wasn't there. I did find that the next 2 AB's I got are a lot smarter and are much more eager to eat. I have found that with the flake food and blood worms that the ABs plus all the other fish, and the eel in the tank are thriving, and that they are just about growing out of their tank. I just don't know where I can put a bigger tank in my house, so I might just have to see if I can find homes for some of the other fish.
So for now the Tarantula need is tempered with the fact that I am old enough that I may not be able to care for it for it's entire life span. So no Tarantulas for me today. Some of the long haired Tarantulas are very pretty though.
Well I should go and bug the cute little white spider that lives in my garden. I wouldn't mind finding a black and yellow Argiope in the garden somewhere.
I'm taking some of Weave's flock so that the <unladylike word*> City of Hoquiam quits writing her unfair tickets for her "overage" of poultry.
She's pretty sure she can get them to Olympia with no problem. Is there anyone that can assist with getting them from Olympia to Everett, or even to Seattle? I could probably even make the trip to South Center in SeaTac if necessary.
Please PM me if you can.. She's unable to log in currently, but is going to keep trying.
Course, if I could only make it to Olympia, that would give me the perfect excuse to run over to Shelton and get some turkeys, which I do NOT need to have the opportunity to do, someone please spare my checking account
OK, Jen. I got it to upload a picture, but when I go to choose an avatar, it still wants to take the big one off the computer. What do I do next?

If you use the BYC uploader, there is an option you can select to resize while uploading. You need to choose a pic to use as your avatar, and upload it to BYC. When you upload, make sure that you select to resize to avatar size. Avatars can't be larger than 100x100. Once you upload a pic 100x100 or smaller you can choose it as your avatar.
