I just am lucky enough to have a few select cochins who will hatch a rock if I let them! LOL So I can mark eggs & slip them into the broody boxes, grab a hen & she'll usually just sit! LOL It's just dark & pretty calm out right now....do you know where Leader Lake is? We're right across from that...you drive by my house on the way to the ski hill...

You must be right by the old school house that burned? It was a shame to lose the school house, but I am glad that they saved your home. It was a scary summer last year. Let's hope for a better one this year.

Yes, the schools (both) are in our backyard. We're right off State Route 20 (aka HWY 20). In my fire thread, I have photos of the log one burning down...and burned down...it was really sad. I'm glad they saved our home and even more thankful all of the animals made it out alive & safe!

Hi there! I'm brand new to this site and to chicken raising. I'm in Duvall.

We have 4 Buff Orpingtons who are now 2 1/2 weeks old, and 2 Light Brahmas who are 5 days old. I'm worried about one of the Orps, she is way smaller than the others and lethargic and not feathering as much. Keeping my eye on her

I'd love to have a couple silkies some day too!

Well...no "heat" lightning...but we have had lightning this spring. Make sure to bring hubby up this summer....lots of great fishing and camping....just tell him this is the "wet season" and that it will dry up and be great. Bring him up to Barter Faire...he'll have fun.

I have seen some crazy storms come through. I am up high enough, hat once we watched lightning hit (a few years ago) a building to the west of us (across the valley) and it caught the building/garage on fire. We called it in to 911 and told them how to get there. I love the storms, they are beautiful, crazy and scary sometimes, but gorgeous.

I agree!
It sure is entertaining...verses someplace that has hot 110 degrees sun for 10 months out of the year (NorCal)

Have fun !

Yes, we have lots of dry lightning...none so far this year....How close was the fire to you last year - Rare Feathers? It was so scary. We were so concerned, during the fire last year, for all the people in Pleasant Valley. Going up the Loup, seeing all the damage, even now, is so scary. This fire was horrible.

Here's some pics I took the other day: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=352283

And here's the thread on the fire...do you know where the Pine Grove school is? That's my backyard.

I remember when we lived out there on top of the bluff, above round lake, we could look down into Aeneas Valley, and see the entire world, and all the fires in the summer, my daughter was 3...so that was 1984...very very dry year, heat lightening, and fires all over.
We moved the following spring.
But I did love it out there.
II am terrified of the fire though..you are lucky to be alive !

I don't think I said thank you to those who offered me advice on my sick chicken the other day. She got to be in such bad shape that my DH put her down this afternoon. She couldn't open her eyes, wasn't eating or drinking, no pooping at all, she couldn't even stand up and her head was twisted off to one side all the time. When I'd lay her down in the box I had her in she would just fall over.

I had one die in my hands the day after Mother's day and watching her suffer made me realize I didn't want to put another bird through that. So I'm a little sad tonight. It's harder too because the kids are all sad as well. We tried everything we could think of but she was just too far gone. She didn't even have any color left in her skin; face, comb, wattles, legs...all a pale gray color. She was a very sweet little thing and it was really hard to make that decision but I really think it was what was kindest to her. (But you can feel free to reassure me anyway!)

I may need a cookie.
