I know how that goes. One chick hatches Oh no! I have to buy a couple to keep it company. Next thing you know you have a brooder full of chicks that are of various ages again.

And I find myself standing around confused about why this happed again.

I am glad you found him a home, I know that he has been a favorite of yours, ever since you figured out he wasn't a she.

The brooder was 4' x 4' if I remember correctly. I know that I am happy to have the floor space back.

We still have 11 eggs we took away from those 5 broody hens. They are in my makeshift incubator (planting tray, plastic lid, adjustable light and thermometer). Jenna was looking at them today and she says that three of them are makins tapping noises. Yes, justbugged, it is like you say. It started with one and we are up to 8 now and the count could rise to 11 or more. I was not going to get any more chicks this year. Oh well, the grandkids love them.

We build our nest bowes out of plywood, with the poop tray on top, and 2 rows of nest boxes each row is about 2 1/2 feet high (and same for each box wide) even if I have the lovely recycle boxes, I found I still had to build a shelf to put them on, and attach them so the hens did not pull them off when they flew up.
It got to be easier to just build the nest boxes.
But it is awful fun watching you all compete to collect the recycle boxes.'I had a hen when I was a teen ( a thoud=sand years ago) that would go nuts to get in my washer which was on the back porch.
I had everyone tossing dirty landry about and in the machine and she would get in there and go broody/and/or just lay an egg and so many time we almost "washed" her or her egg.
I had to train alot of men to put the LID DOWN !!!!!

Anyone else find a clutch of eggs in a funny place ?
Zgoatlady said she just had a hen nest in her driveway gravel ! That is very odd~~right out in the open ?
