I know there is a Wyandotte thread and both an English Orpington and Lavender Orpington threads. I lurk on all of those and have learned A LOT. People post pics and you can find out who has birds you like and most of them sell eggs/chicks or even started birds. There are also Breed Club websites. I know that the Ameraucana Breeder Club ( http://www.ameraucana.org/ ) has a nice website with a forum. Cochin International is another good website if you are interested in cochins. Do your research and read as much as you can about the breeds that interest you and use that as a starting point. And Have Fun!!!!!

I'm wondering if starting with a mixed color flock is the way to go. Or would it be better to start with one color first? What are the pro's and cons to keeping a same breed but mixed colored flock of AM's be?

Well, if you wanted to breed them true, you would need a seperate pen for each set of colors. Or you could start with BBS. Blue doesn't breed true, so if you breed two blue together, they will throw blue, black and splash offspring. Then you decide what color you like best or if you want to keep all three colors, will help decide which roos & hens to keep. Thank you again! I saved the website as a reference. My main goal is aimed torwards the wheaton color, but I still would like to bringhoma one black and one blue hen... What I will do with them... Well I'm not 100% sure just yet. "I think I read somewhere that its good to keep a black to cross with the Wheaton, something to do with keeping the colors true?" I'm not sure, I will have to do more research.

My Blue Ams are PipsandPeeps (Jean's) babies hatched from eggs...and the one with the darker head fading to the blue body I believe to be a roo, what do you think Illia ?
The black ones are OEs.

He is a really nice guy, however busy so if you want. call and speak to him once, he is really good at taking the info and your phone and when he has an empty tank he will call you and you go get it, or call me and I can get it for you and keep it here, until you can come get it.
The tanks come from China, and it cost too much to send them back.
They contain "Phosphate Cleaner", is non toxic and we clean them out at the car wash with a pressure sprayer and hot water.
You could use a portable pressure washer or hot water out of your hot water tank, careful not to melt your hose.

I thought I had gotten a virus so have spent hours running virus/malware trying to get the keyboard to type, guess there is a lock somewhere I do not know about ?

I do not have wheatens, maybe Illia or Jean does, or someone in the Am Club.
I plan on joining the Club soon...but trying to save every penny to build our house and dig the well....

I keep my hens mixed, my cockerels/cocks mixed, but keep the genders separate until I breed them.

Keeping them mixed and able to breed colors over colors will cause EE colors to appear, and thus people will consider your birds Easter Eggers. If you want to breed them, keep the boys of one color away from the girls of another color - Wether that be separate pens, coops, or whole pastures. If you don't want to breed them for selling, it won't really matter. It is up to you.

If someone was wondering - I have Wheaten, Blue Wheaten, and Blue/Black/Splash Ameraucanas.

Next year I plan to add Buff Ameraucanas to that list.
