I am also fairly new to breeding, been working on growing out our starter stock, mostly from eggs purchased on here, in hopes that they will be producing by spring.

My advice is, after you determine what breeds you want to work, try and find a related thread on here with other folks who are working on that breed.

I know there is a Wyandotte thread and both an English Orpington and Lavender Orpington threads. I lurk on all of those and have learned A LOT. People post pics and you can find out who has birds you like and most of them sell eggs/chicks or even started birds. There are also Breed Club websites. I know that the Ameraucana Breeder Club ( http://www.ameraucana.org/ ) has a nice website with a forum. Cochin International is another good website if you are interested in cochins. Do your research and read as much as you can about the breeds that interest you and use that as a starting point. And Have Fun!!!!!

Thank you! Ive already been lurking on the Ameraucana thread. lol Just trying to get my head in order before I join the conversation. And I do plan on joining the Ameraucana club, but that wont be for a little while yet.

I'm wondering if starting with a mixed color flock is the way to go. Or would it be better to start with one color first? What are the pro's and cons to keeping a same breed but mixed colored flock of AM's be?

Well, if you wanted to breed them true, you would need a seperate pen for each set of colors. Or you could start with BBS. Blue doesn't breed true, so if you breed two blue together, they will throw blue, black and splash offspring. Then you decide what color you like best or if you want to keep all three colors, will help decide which roos & hens to keep. If you aren't sure how the BBS breeding works, check out the breeding chart on www.bluepoultry.com.

Thank you again! I saved the website as a reference. My main goal is aimed torwards the wheaton color, but I still would like to bringhoma one black and one blue hen... What I will do with them... Well I'm not 100% sure just yet. "I think I read somewhere that its good to keep a black to cross with the Wheaton, something to do with keeping the colors true?" I'm not sure, I will have to do more research.

OK OK OK sorry that wasn't nice but really should be anytime. Waitin fer new chickens to lay is like waiting for water to boil. It won't happen until you look away.

HEHE, I tried the threaten them with "hey if you don't start producing eggs, I know a roaster pan with your names on it.....
gig.gif
They just looked at me like sure we will get right on that... NOT....

Lisa and Gary Cree. Although, if you want blue eggs - They've got them. If you want real Ameraucanas - They don't technically have them anymore. Chances are, 50% of your chicks from them will be cleanfaced.

Anyone else would be Jean, Ameraucana Breeder's Club (soon to be) president in eastern WA, and there's also me.

The sad part is Illia... I was thinking about you today, and then totally forgot you have AM's lol I'm having one of those days. I was just asking about Cree because I know they have or um had true Am's. But I was really just wanting to look at their website.

Maby I should post these questions on the Ameraucana thread. lol But I want to see what you all think first, because you are local.

My Blue Ams are PipsandPeeps (Jean's) babies hatched from eggs...and the one with the darker head fading to the blue body I believe to be a roo, what do you think Illia ?
The black ones are OEs.
I love these birds !
The full beards are so handsome !

Yes you are right night is the time to kill a colony because they are all in the hive. The first time I got attacked was during the day and I didn't know they were there until too late. The second time was AFTER dark when I went to spray them. I think the problem came when I took the rake and scratched the nest open

so the spray could get in better. This nest is not in a real good place to burn it too close to my barn but that may be the next option just have to have the hose ready and do good fire watch.

Careful !!!!

Where do you get those tanks? and how much $?? I currently use blue rain(food) barrels but they get annoying to try and clean. Can those that you have clean up easy?
I'm also looking for a 20'-ish shipping container for low cost. does not have to be pretty just solid and water tight. I have to rebuild my garage and the carport "tent" thingie just does not keep water out so everything is back into the garage

**********The tanks are from a company not far from here called Halosource, and the man in charge is the project manger named Dan Perry.
His numbers:
tel:360-942-1322
cell:360-942-7304
He is a really nice guy, however busy so if you want. call and speak to him once, he is really good at taking the info and your phone and when he has an empty tank he will call you and you go get it, or call me and I can get it for you and keep it here, until you can come get it.
The tanks come from China, and it cost too much to send them back.
They contain "Phosphate Cleaner", is non toxic and we clean them out at the car wash with a pressure sprayer and hot water.
You could use a portable pressure washer or hot water out of your hot water tank, careful not to melt your hose.
Halosource is at 1725 Ocean Ave (101)
Raymond, WA 98577
Sorry not to be on line until now...I bumped something on my keyboard and it would not type !
I thought I had gotten a virus so have spent hours running virus/malware trying to get the keyboard to type, guess there is a lock somewhere I do not know about ?
I had to shut it off and back on to get it to type !!!
OK, now gotta go to work, hope I amswered all the Qs, Chicken Rustler be careful !
I bet you scare your wife terrible !
************Cheryl, the Ams are awesome !
As Illia said, these are fully bearded, and the others not so much.
I do not have wheatens, maybe Illia or Jean does, or someone in the Am Club.
I plan on joining the Club soon...but trying to save every penny to build our house and dig the well....

I keep my hens mixed, my cockerels/cocks mixed, but keep the genders separate until I breed them.

Keeping them mixed and able to breed colors over colors will cause EE colors to appear, and thus people will consider your birds Easter Eggers. If you want to breed them, keep the boys of one color away from the girls of another color - Wether that be separate pens, coops, or whole pastures. If you don't want to breed them for selling, it won't really matter. It is up to you.

If someone was wondering - I have Wheaten, Blue Wheaten, and Blue/Black/Splash Ameraucanas.

Next year I plan to add Buff Ameraucanas to that list.

Yes, usually a nice, dark, nearly black head and blue body points roo early on. Also, look out for the shoulders and tail turning a very dark blue color.
