We did not get any snow yesterday either , in fact we had a nice sunny day mixed with some clouds but getting a light dusting so far today. Very Cold.

Do you know where flies go in the winter?

So if you have this bucket of meat scraps...I told DH and he said Oh great! So now we will have 4 or 5 stinking buckets of rotten meat hanging around attracting flies for miles....

He basically said NO.

I would be interested in your female sebastopol. I can't possibly take on any more males (I am still trying to sell an extra one) and gave away my last one for practically nothing....so depending on your price and the quality of the female and if you're willing to sell her separately, I'd be interested in the female. I'm in Okanogan.

After talking with T Hi the other day, I am thinking I might get the runner ducks and some muscovy's in the Spring instead of chickens.

Any thoughts?

check my byc page.. I made a raised coop that is 4x4 and is pretty simple. I added "side coops" as well each section is 4x4 so easy for 2 people to dismantled (the sections are connected by a metal strip) and move each section. Also each section can be moved in the back of a pickup truck if ya move etc...

1 thing I found with mine is that my nest box needs a piece of wood along the door side or the nesting materials tend to fall out. other then that its perfect for 6-8 birds! (I have 10 in there now and there is a minor shortage of roost space)

I have to say I am pretty impressed with how resourceful and clever many of you are at putting things together and making them work. You seemed to get a proper and functional coop up with very little $$. Very nice!

There are a few descriptions on BYC

The flies are attracted to blood, injuries, dying tissue. I read a few threads here where a hen had an egg break inside and got a little injury, then about a week later the hen gets bloated, stops laying and usually dies. One person in Vancouver had been giving her hen near daily baths thinking it was lice, and then one morning went to the coop to find her hen covered with flies and maggots and they were flying out of her cloaca! There was another I read where a vet did an autopsy and the bird was half eaten on the inside and another where a silkie roo recovered, but they were all digging and eating his flesh along the crease near the top of his leg and I think under his wing. The maggots eat primarily dead meat, but when they run out, they will eat fresh tissue as well. They produce a toxin that can kill a dog in 12 hours. I don't think I'd want to attract carrion maggots to anywhere near my hens! The maggots are pointy shaped. I've seen them on a dead rabbit (I think) when I went for a hike near here.

Blasted, lol. We're certainly not getting blasted. Tiniest dusting on the ground, otherwise the weather has been pretty sunny. But yes, we usually get the worst of winds and rain.

In the winter, most species of flies are done for and in pupal or larval stage. If not that, they're hiding in buildings in a sort of hibernation state.
