That is tempting ... especially since DS decided to make cookies from scratch while I was taking DD to harp lessons. He put the K.A. Mixer on high with dry ingredients and a cold stick of butter .... flour and bits of butter everywhere

Simple green?? Baking soda simple green and bleach = excellent cleaner

I've got all those .... I use SG to wash walls.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Would anyone like to invite DS over to cook your dinner for you?

I can't remember what is in H-B-H or why. I just tknow that my supplier recommends it and they really know thier stuff. You can get it or similar from Mannlake or better bee or probably most any supplier. If you are not growing strong brood your hives probably won't do well brood keeps em going. They need 2 deep boxes full of brood/honey to do well through the winter. I don't have all the answers as I am fairly new too. I just got my first package of bees last spring but they did well and I was able to extract 20# (1 1/2 gal) of honey. CL can tell ya how nasty it was.

Wow, lots of action lately. . .

Well today was fun. Culled two young cockerels, grilled some delicious chicken, called up a lady about some free roosters she has (gonna pick em up tomorrow) and finally my Shamo pullet is laying again. . .

Also, my babies in the bator are due to hatch in just 5 days!!!!

Did any of you have cats on your property before you got chickens ? How did you deal with their interaction knowing you want to free range your chickens ? Thoughts ?

Yes. The cats honestly just kind of steered clear of the chickens, though our main one we had for quite a while and still have is really great with them. They know he's harmless and he doesn't bother them at all.

It's our new kittens that are really dumb and annoying. Luckily though when they hit the pastures where most of the hens are, they're too "lost" in such a large new place to bother chasing anyone. But up on the main lawn. . .

But now we've got an amazing cat repellent called Shamo chickens!!

I imagine it was hard to find takers!

Every time we do an inspection there is plenty of brood and everything is healthy and happy. Our friend jack is 93 and has been keeping bees for Ohh a hunnert years and he is passing on his knowledge to Nathan.. I am just the bystander.

Actually we are interested in a couple Partridge 'Dottes but can split the order however it works. http://www.paulspoultry.com/requestform.html He's not cheap though, ~ $13.25 per chick if it's an order of 12

What's the minimum order? I thought they were $9.50/chick? How many are you wanting?

12 chick minimum @ $9.50/chick (or thereabouts) + $45 for the shipping & box. Really all we would want is 2 or 3. Maybe we can just buy a couple from someone. ???

We have two. This is hive #1's second winter and hive #2's first winter .. They appear to be doing ok. They fly on warmer days. And the hives are buzzy. I can hear them. Our friend jack will come up on a warmer day soon and we will check hive happiness down inside.

I hope they arent too loud. One of the signs of a happy healthy hive is that it is very quiet. you should barely be able to hear them. 50-60 db is good 80 db is problems brewing.
