Congrats to everyone who showed yesterday at Monroe. It was my first show where I entered a bird (two actually, both non recognized types) and I had a very good time!
The weather you North folks have SURE is better than what we've been getting in Olympia! Sunny and WARM!
There were a lot of nice birds and people were very helpful when I collared a few to ask them questions. Poor Robin, I tried not to bug her too much, but she sure helped calm my nerves! I did have a good laugh at her honest anwser (I LOVE THAT IN A MENTOR!) when I said (all excited) "LOOK! Everyone is looking at my chicken!" and she said "Yeah, because he's so WEIRD!"
Poor Rodger, he's a BLRW but he stands like a pouter pidgeon I think they are called. He throws his head back and sticks that big chest right in your face. I don't think the judge was overy impressed with his type, but several people were kind about his pretty coloring!
Will post some pics later this afternoon as I get a chance. Again, congrats to all, win or not, for supporting purebred poultry. I forgot to sign up to join the club, and will do that soon.
I do want to mention one thing: I stopped off to watch the auctioning of some pretty dairy calves to 4H kids. Wow!! these cattle went for over $1000 a piece! I bet not too long ago they were like $100! Anyway, the announcer said something I thought was awesome... He said "Buying a heifer now was cheaper than bailing them out of jail later". I think this is SO true... I watched the 4H kids handle their chickens at the show and I was really impressed with their dedication and their relationships with their birds. Lucky kids, whose parents care enough to support them in this. My parents bought my a little backyard bred, shy, unregistered yellow lab pup when I was 14 years old. My best friends were doing drugs and getting abortions at that age! I went "dog crazy" and now, at 51, have still never done either!
That cheap little dog (and really, no real support from my parents to do dog stuff) got me started in obedience and then into a lifetime of work with and for animals. I sure thank her.
