T HI : Glad to hear you are finally getting some answers. That is definitely important. Now maybe they can help you to feel better.

Well, I sold 4 pullets yeterday...$7 a piece. DH was glad that my birds are starting to pay for themselves. I said yes, the $28 will go back into the birds...let me think, how many bags of food have I bought? The netting was $100. How many fence posts at $8 each, wire?, Sand was $180, ummmmm: 2 pre-fab little chicken cabins....gate?, let's just round it all up to $1000 (+/-). So $1000 minus $28 = a long way to go to make this pay for itself.

This is my hobby and he understands. Hobbies can get spendy...but mine does bring in a couple bucks and I get eggs, and we will eat whoever is left. His hobby: motorcycles and archery shooting. No money coming for them..

Well, DD had a major fact of life thrown in face yesterday. She started crying after the people left who bought the 4 chicks. I had to tell her: We cannot keep them all. Anyone who is left will go to freezer camp (had to explicity explain this one). She finally accepted all this as long as I promised not to eat any of the birds in the big girl run (I have no intention - these are my egg layers). She was almost hysterical. I had to explain that we are not chicken hoarders and we only have so much room. Also, that is what the birds are here for and that the best thing that we can do for them is give them the best life possible - food, treats, water, free run, care/love - until it is time. Give them the best life. then we eat them. That does sound kind of wrong when I write it down....

But anyway, she was better after we talked. She was okay as long as she didnt' have to know about it, see it, or help. I assured her she would not have to see or help.

Facts of life can be hard to learn.

My biggest tip is to look at the size of the air sac in every egg. Sometimes the egg is just so darn full, that it is hard to actually see the chick moving in there, so I go by the size of the air sac, especially at lockdown. The more you look at, the more you will know if it is the correct size for lockdown. In earlier candling's it's easier to see a blood ring or to tell that the chick isn't moving. It's a little harder at lockdown. Good luck!!!!

The air sac....I knew I was suppose to be watching this....I forgot. So, the air sac gets larger? What happens to it?

I am so sorry I ask so many questions...but I find this all so fascinating.

Yes it gets bigger as the liquid in the egg evaporates. This drawing helped me.

Hope I did that right!

OK, here I are! Have a bit of time this morning to check in. Hope some of you don't think I've been ignoring you.

CR, thats great news on Michelle. Hopefully the road to recovery continues smoothly.

T Hi, Glad you finally got a diagnosis! Hope treatment is sucessful and you can live life no longer in pain and be able to get back to work.

Chickie, Forgot about my project with the Golden Cuckoos. It was a small experiment. Didn't know you had a hen. Sold an extra roo over winter. I'll be hatching a few as soon as the hens start laying. It will be my first breeding with GC to GC. I'll let you know how it goes. Your garden looks awesome. I barely got basil seed planted in flats a few days ago. Also the scallions just got seeded in the ground. Would love to have scallions right now. When did you plant them? I tried to overwinter some but they tend to get slimy.

Sadie Sue, On those chicks from the Light Sussex if there are any without feathered legs you could still get some Black Orpington crosses.

Ogress, was great to see you again! Sorry your MFC eggs didn't hatch. But now you have some cutey patutty chickels. They could have 2 different fathers so may not be related to your 2 from RFF. Was good to meet your son. What a nice boy.

OK, I didn't get in on the garden pictures in late winter since I didn't have any and people were asking. Taking lots of pictures this season as I plan on starting a website. Heres a few so far taken a few days ago.

OMG!! I am so jealous!! I haven't ever had a real garden to speak of and I tried so hard to start plants in the house, I tried starting onions by seed and they never came up?? I have grow lights and stands in my spare room, the broccoli and cauliflower grew awesome but, because of the weather I had to keep putting off putting them in the garden and my lettuce was an experiment cause I've never grown it, I just throw some seeds in a used plastic container and they grew great too, but, now the real test, see if I can get any to grow in the real garden!! NICE JOB!!! I love looking at everyones plants and pics it gives me ideas and keeps me going, in an area where we grow just about anything my brown thumb is evident!! Guess that's why I became a vet tech, animals are easier!!!

Excellent news! She will feel so good when she gets home! When my mom broke her leg in March, it took her over 2 months to get home because she lives on the second floor with no elevator. She was soooooooooooooo happy to get home!

That's very good to hear!!!
