If I had enough room to grow out everything I hatched I would do what Ilia said. But reality being what it is, IF I happened to hatch something (mutt or otherwise) that I immediately knew was a cockerel, AND it was not going to be show quality, I would cull it immediately and save the space and $$ in feed for something I wanted to keep.

Exactly. The trick is going to be culling cute, little chicks I don't want to spend time and money on. According to the chicken calculator it doesn't make sense to breed the Spitz/Brabanter cockerels, only the pullets.

What brilliant coloring on that guy! Oh I hope he didn't meet an unfortunate end because he was the wrong mix - he's glorious. So now it's the Shamos over the Sussex? That makes sense. The Sussex you got from CGG, those are nice big birds. My foster hen, Whitey Ford is one of hers as well though right now she is in horrible shape after 6 weeks of being broody, raising chicks and molting. I have got to get some weight on that girl.

Always enjoy when you share pics Illia, thank you.

No, he didn't meet a bad end. That photo was taken just a few days ago. He ended up being such a beautiful and huge hunk that I'm keeping him.

He's actually bigger than both his parents. Very broad too.

Whew. He is fantastic. Such posture, (not sure what you call it on a bird), his comb and tail appear very nice as well and I cannot get over his coloring!

Yep, the posture and tail credit both go to daddy. (Polish) The beautiful color credit goes to both but mainly daddy (Tolbunt, but because mottling is recessive, he's a Gold Laced) The broad body and large size go to mommy (Marans) And the comb and feathered legs go to mommy.

A little more of that tail -

I know what I would/am going to do, but I have plenty of room and no neighbors I need to worry much about: raise them to roaster size, sell them to people who have already expressed interest, and have them butchered by somebody with stronger hands than I have.

I'll bring them to you.

Problem solved.

This may, indeed, be the best solution, and one more reason to get the old greenhouse cleaned out and reroofed.

You've got until next spring sometime.

That's good. I'm about 10% short of making it through the rest of today's tasks at the moment. And I should definitely bought a new box of tissues this past weekend!

She is as loud as my ameraucana was! Not bad out where I live though. I would take her but I don't have any room at the moment. Hopefully you find a good home for her!

Yes, I didn't realize a chicken could be so loud! She doesn't just talk; she DEMANDS attention! LOL Our Ameraucana's are quiet so far - here's hoping they stay that way
