Good morning friends! I'm up and sipping my cuppa. My stomach and body seem to be doing better today. I certainly can't afford another day in bed, that is for sure! My house is scary trashed. DH was working on side jobs all day yesterday, so not much got done on the house. I honestly think EVERY single dish (except baking pans) is dirty.

Last night my hubby brought home two more hens and two more roosters. His friend was feeding a local hawk with his hens. He decided he was done with chickens and wanted the whole group gone. He thought he had three hens and a rooster. DH arrived home with them and one of the "hens" is definitely a cross (maybe silky or frizzle?) roo. We put them all together last night in the coop and watched for any problems.
It is supposed to be stormy today, so I'll leave the birds in the coop for the day. Will have to leave the light off, I'm afraid to have it on with the new roos in there. Need to find a home for two roosters....anyone want one? We canNOT keep four roosters. Problem is, DH refuses to let any of them go someplace they will become food. He has become attached to the two we already had. We both want to keep the larger of the new ones. And DD wants to keep the smaller of the new ones (which would not be big enough for food anyways). I have a feeling we will end up finding a new home for Joe (barred rock mutt rooster). We'll probably keep the Road Island Red (there is some question on his breed, discussion going on a different thread), just because he is beautiful. We'll probably keep Kung Pao (barred rock mutt), because he is one of the first ones we hatched from our own birds and we are sentimental. I'm not sure on the little one yet. He is obviously a cross of some sort, either frizzle or silky. He is the softest bird I've ever touched and DD really wants to keep him. Problem is, last night he was the only one that was being picked on when we put the birds together. He is so much smaller, the hens were beating him up.

Ah, life in the country.

He's gotten zapped a few times with the horse fence...he's over 100lbs and has extremely thick fur. I've seen him standing & touching the fence with his fur and not even reacting. We have a solar charger (horse) around the dog kennel because the Borzoi I used to have would climb out. The horse zapper was the only thing that kept him in. LOL

RFF We put stock panel on the bottom half of our runs the 6X6 " or 8X8", on the outside of the wire would this work on him?

Maybe but he might just rip it off? It would have to be REALLY wired on there. I think the solution is no more scraps in there at all...which sucks because sometimes I have a lot of food to get rid of it--and it's easier (and cheaper) to throw it to the birds.

RFF, sounds like you either need to restrain/kennel/shut away the dog while the chickens are eating the scraps, or set up a chicken feeder (maybe out of an old 55 gal drum?) that the chickens can get into to eat, or fly up to, but the dog cannot

I am amused that Roxy-dog seems to like apples as much as the chickens do .. though she seems to see them as "edible balls" and wants me to throw them a few times before she crunches down on them ...

both the chickens and the dog would rather eat the pears (but those aren't wormy, we're keeping those to eat ourselves)

which reminds me, I forgot to go check on the ripening blackberries -- with all this rain, they're probably moldy by now

it's raining again -- I went and dumped the puddled rain on the tarp over the run, but I'm not going to pull it off and reattach it until the rain quits --- Harbor Freight has a good sale on ball-bungees, will probably go over there and get some more when DH gets back

I have a friend in Ohio that raises Goldens. Does your friend also have German (I forget if it is short or wirehaired) Pointers?

*tries not to get "Its a small world" stuck in my head*

Nope - but wouldn't that have been an amazing coincidence? No, my friend is "Top Hat Goldens". She has beautiful dogs.

Hey now we could always turn the tool shed in to a coop

and he'd do all the work???
big_smile.png

Are you close by? what kind of roofing materials?

Yes - fairly close by.

The tool shed is no good for anything. Long story short - we built a "chicken coop" from freebie craigslist stuff (shelf, free wood, etc.) that cost way too much because of all the hardware, is way too heavy to move, and the chickens hated it (too skinny and long - could not find their way in nor out.) I ended up purchasing a used coop off craigslist for much cheaper than all the hardware - and when we moved the stupid thing out of the way it was so heavy we dropped it and now the structure is no longer solid.

So - with new plywood - I could get my husband to do the cutting. He just bought a new blade for his skil-saw and I know he'd love to use it. And I could even get him to pick up the wood, cut it, and deliver it. But no putting together - I'd rather help with that. Hammer and/or drill - we have both.

But I sent a link to a free coop last night that I hope will make this all a moot point

I said up there a ways that I need a day off today, right, no matter what, pushed myself too far, can't do it again? So of course my brain is racing with design fixes and this that the other maybe not use the livestock panel and use the small diameter PVC for an arch and then wire and ohbythewayyouneedtogivetheHamburgsmoreweatherprotectionanddon'tforgetyouhavetogetaplaceready fortheBAandanywayheyyou'realmostoutofjeansandtheflooriscoveredwithdoghairandwhatareyougoingtocookfordinnerandblahblahblahblahguiltandshameandyouareresponsibleforeverything that'severgonewronginyourchildren'slives... so, yeah, not much sleep, ho boy.

I know a few folks staying in the camp ground. I hear its nice and has hook ups if you pay. Showers and all that stuff. See you there!

FYI Stevenson also has a free WIFI that works ok. In April I was able to be on line a (laptop) in my booth and in the trailer.

Hi CR,
What do you think of the Fairgrounds as a place to RV camp? Do they have any hookups, especially power? It looks like we'll be taking our trailer down and I was thinking the fairgrounds would be super convenient. I like the wi-fi part, too. And I'll finally get to see your art in person.

I know there is free chili Friday too.

We RVed there in April. It was ok. On pavement there was power at that was it. If you haven't already get a reservation soon as they have limited space. The nice thing is the spaces are all very close to all of the events. Do you know about when you may get there ? Maybe we could park together I hear a masked person may be having a potluck with a bunch of ducks on friday night.

anyway, it's raining/drizzling a very chilling and miserable day -- it IS a day to stay inside, warm, cuddled up

wish I could loan you this very warm, very touchy pointer ... it's flattering when she flops into me, but a nuisance when I am trying to think or type
