OK Here I go maybe one long ramble isn't as likely to get me in trouble as several short posts.

As for using cedar I know there are several opinions and I think like with many things each person needs to decide whart they want to do. We never had any problems when we used it when we had our goats. Nice smell, helps with bugs etc. BUT yes as I understand there are some risks. Also if ya wanna use yer poo (well ok yer chickies poo) in the garden. Cedar is out see it takes like forever to break down.

CL You have a good bunch of hive parts there. You really should replace the migratory top and bottoms with a bottom board and a telescoping cover with inner cover. As for the "dirty" Frames. Good luck cleaning them with anything less than a light duty sand blaster. That is what we do. And then you will need to roll some bees wax on.

Our new pullets from Mia gave us 4/6 today. Still smallish and in fact I have a RIR B whois laying an egg that looks just like what we gets from the cornie.

I'm pleased with my purchases from them. I noticed that almost eerything they have on their website is at the Maple Valley location, North Bend has a big selection as well. I wish I had known about all the interior and exterior wood doors when we built out house, we could have saved a bundle! Maybe I ought to submit photos of my chicken palace (from before the interior got dirtied with chicken poop). It is nicer looking than the nice shed they have posted.

I got only 4 eggs today. 6 yesterday. Now that tax season has started, and I am working again, I have a lot of co-workers asking for eggs. I don't know why so many of my birds have never given me an egg. They can't have a hidden nest - with the terrible weather we have had, and a predator on the loose, I have been hesitant to let them out of the run when I am not around.

On Tuesday morning, while my hens were out for an hour before I had to go to work, a hawk (I assume) killed and shredded a rabbit on my lawn just on the other side of my wire fence, not 10 feet from my free-ranging chickens! That bunny was only a little smaller than my hens. I did not see it happen, but after I waited at the bus-stop with DD at 8:30, I went and fed all the animals, changed their water, etc. It took me half an hour. I walked through that gate and their were no scattered bunny parts. I took 20 minutes or so to get ready, and I heard the chickens making quite a commotion. 2 of my roosters were looking toward the gate and making some really odd sounding alarm calls which sent the hens running from the vegetable garden and ducking under bushes. I looked out the window (I can't see the gate, but can see 10 feet in front of it) and did not see anything. The roosters continued their calling, so I walked out the door and found shredded bunny just in front of the gate! When I went into the yard, all my birds, even the roos flocked tightly around me so I led them into their covered run and closed the door. For now they are only being let out while I am out with them or in my office where I can see everyone.

that I got from Jbear. I found her yesterday and thought maybe my cat had done her in. he was out there running around like he was crazy meowing his head off. he almost got a one way trip to the vet... this morning I came out to a lot of racket from the girls and little Larry screaming his head off, the hawk is sitting on the outer perimeter fence of the run above the live trap I put out for whatever got my chicken, she is in the live trap. I had locked all the chickens up last night under the covered part of their run, glad I did... I assume my cat was being a nut job because thats a big bird and he really wanted to do something but wasnt quite sure what. my cat has killed full grown weasels and rabbits so I am sure he contemplated taking the hawk on. it is a young hawk , they raised a bunch around here this year. stupid bird...

Sorry to hear about your little one. This is one of my fears is an areial attack. That is why even though others say I don't need to I have covered all of my outdoor runs. I have hawks and eagles here and have have found (as you may remember reading) evidence of a very large bird hitting the top of one of my runs.

I was going to load up scalding water & a bit of bleach solution & power wash the frames...most are clean never used.
But about 4 or 5 are dirty.

I have never had an issues with this cedar shavings in my compost.
What takes forever to break down, is straw........hate straw !!
The balance I have here with white & cedar shavings, sand, poo & leaves/garden waste, works very well!!
