I'm getting really excited for the Ancona hatch day. This will be my first hatch ever! Have you decided if you're going to keep some?

Quote:

Christine - well, I'm not sure how many are "viable" because hubby got the eggs mixed up (yours are labelled) and I didn't want to keep the door open on the incubator to check. On lockdown day, I shall make sure all YOUR eggs go into the hatcher, and if there are a goodly number, I might keep 2, but if not, I shall return them all to you.

The barn was built in the 1930's probably just before CR was born

Its old and slowly falling apart but it keeps my girls dry and out of the wind! I really don't think you need to insulate a coop around here. The only reason I did was because I got the stuff for free.

Insulating a coop where there is severe cold DOES help, in that it reduces the amount of condensation which can build up on walls & floors inside the coop from chicken's breathing..and results in moldy coop litter & nesting material.
I have insulated coops and windows cracked open for fresh air.
Insulation is not necessary to keep them warm, just to prevent condensation & mold/mildew build up.

Now you just need to get your hair cut!! LOL!! just kidding!!

You might want to look up Star Gazer here.... it's a vitamin deficiency thing. It's exactly what you describe, the twisting, turning, can't get up thing. I would also get some Poly-Visol infant vitamins (NOT the one's with extra IRON, too much iron is bad for chicks). They come in a dropper like form. Drip some on the chicks beak a couple times a day.

X2 But usually star gazers look up over their backs, staring UP, and knod side to side, they do not twirl (walking) they just look UP & fall over backwards.
