Thanks! Summer we open one end and winter we close it. We have an incubator room, brooder room and a room with sink and table for what ever and then pens inside to go to the outside runs. Then the out side runs on the east side open into the fenced pasture for letting them in long grass.

I told ya !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We just got the gQf brooder (like the ones at the feed stores) out & went through it & set it up in the hatching room........as it has a wire floor so the darn poults will not be able to eat shavings !!!!!!!!

Crazy birds !!!
They also grow so fast....I hope they will be able to live in the brooder until Jules can come get them (or Teresa)

Ron so sorry about Ricky retardo !
Yes Buckeroo will step up to the plate, and I have more Cockerels if you need any.
Sounds like Ricky did his job though, and protected the hens.
Still sad !

OK, back to work for me !

They added 10 males for extra warmth when I ordered from my chicks from Ideal.

And did not tell you what breeds they were, right ?
If their skin (all over) and shanks/feet are pink, they are Cuckoo Marans, all Marans have pink...I think they are the only breed that does. I think............
Still look for the hackle though.

Well thats the thing they sent a little card that said " 10 Barred Rock Cockerels added for warmth" But after you mentioned the pink legs I went out and picked them up and all have pink legs with some black and between their toes its really bright bright pink. SO I looked at Ideals website and matched them and think they are the Cuckoo Marans...

In the batch of chicks that Moone and Tyto came in, there were a bunch of Red Star Cockerels that came with them for warmth. I'm not sure how many, maybe about 10. If anyone is interested in them, PM me.

Well, I am now up to nine eggs a day- Malvina has apparently stopped laying to set more thoroughly but the other groups are all on egg-a-day schedules.

It looks like a lot of eggs, it does.

Quinta gets today's smart chicken award for figuring out how to get back up to the chicken coop, and would be my favorite chicken ever except instead of going into the nest box to lay she pulled the nesting material out and made a nest under the perch :/

My younger spawn turned 24 yesterday so my son and his fiance were over for the party- nice to see them, and nicer still that they gave me a ride over to my sister's in time to see her new bull, talk to my BIL about car parts, and to Toby-the-tree-service-guy about taking out my bedeviled Washington Hawthorn next fall.

Have to go get the sheep into his pen so we can go grocery shopping now.

Frizzle Question to I forgot who it was that breeds & raises Frizzles.....

On the Frizzles that wind up smooth, do they or can they still be classified as a Frizzle? -- If they breed do they produce Frizzles as well... or just Smooth.... curious how that Frizzle Gene works with the "non" Frizzled ones...

Thanks Bunches =)

Still thinking our Buff Frizzle will end up Smooth & not Frizzled..

I breed Frizzle and am breeding for Sizzle, so this is from my experience with Frizzle Cochins & Silkies breeding.

When you breed a Frizzle to a Smooth-feathered bird, the smooth-feathered offspring are not then considered Frizzled. They are smooth-feathered birds that MAY carry the Frizzle gene. If you breed that smooth to another Frizzle, their offspring will likely have a greater number of Frizzles than a regular Smooth to Frizzle breeding program. Which is why I like to use Smooth-with-Frizzle genes in my program matched to Frizzle, last hatch 4 out of 6 were Frizzle, one smooth and one had Silkied feathers. I haven't bred the Smooth-with-Frizzle gene to Smooth, however. Nor have I bred Smooth-with-Frizzle to a regular Silkie.
