Got DD off to Florence this morning. Because her flight left so early we decided to spend the night at the Red Lion across from the airport so she could hop their complimentary shuttle at 4 AM. I went back to our room and waited until I knew she was safely on her way. She should be approaching Paris soon for a 2 hour layover and then arrive in Florence a couple of hours after that. I'm very excited for her and the wonderful opportunity to study Food and Wine of Italy, get a crash course in Italian and do an internship at the restaurant. The school is called Apicius and is a world renowned environment for hospitality students.

My parents will be meeting her there for a couple of days later this month so I'm glad to know they'll be able to check and see all is okay with her in a couple of weeks. She's already gotten her apartment assignment about 25 minutes walk from the school. Her apartment faces a Piazza with a beautiful fountain in the center, a church at one end and a cafe across the street. Such an adventure for her - and she's getting school credits!

I also had some sad news today - soon after I arrived home from Sea-Tac my gf called hysterical saying "Simon killed my chicks"! Simon is her silky terrier. Her 6 chicks, who were just over 3 weeks were out enjoying the sunshine in a sunny, penned area and that darn dog found a way to squirm through somehow. She eventually found 2 of the chicks who had escaped harm, and were hiding from her LF who were free ranging in the backyard. These were the 6 chicks I had incubated and hatched for her, including 5 wheaten Marans from zgoatlady and that single silver Ameraucana chick that I had hatched from the egg Jean gave me in Monroe. I am heartsick - she was my little miracle chick and my gf's favorite. Thank goodness one of the two that survived is a little wheaten Marans pullet.

My Silkie and Serama eggs are in lockdown.

Hoping for a good hatch - I've got 9 good Silkie eggs and 6 Seramas that were all looking good when I candled. Now I need to get seriously thinking about where to put them when they outgrow the brooder... I have wonderful plans for a great little Silky house that's low to the ground with a short ramp. I just need to find someone to build it for me! The Seramas will alternately be in the house and then the garage, (remember when some of us used to park cars in our garages?

). Of course on sunny days the Seramas will be outside in the covered X-pen for doses of Vitamin D.

I'm so excited for my own chickie babies I can hardly stand it. Missing my big girl DD chick, so these fluffy babies will have to be a suitable substitute for snuggles!

Well, that answers that question!

Actually it answers a bunch of questions, starting with "are my Hamburgs fertile? Did I handle the eggs correctly?" But: BABIES! and more eggs pipped!

Yeah, I would think it answers a few questions - in the cutest way possible!

They are really cute- and entirely different than the EEs were, starting with being bitty. There are two more eggs hatching, one fully zipped and the other about half way. I was feeding Malvina out of my hand so I moved her feeder over so it is swinging in front of her box (I'll move it away before dark). I shall name them all Dorothy.

Your daughter will have a BLAST. I visited Firenze, Pisa, and Venice while I was stationed in Germany in the '90s. Such a beautiful area, and the people are so friendly! I never made it down to Rome, so I can't compare it, but I will say that everyone I have talked to loved Northern Italy soooo much better! I would love to go back someday. Authentic Italian food is awesome, too! She will learn so much. Great experience for her, she is lucky!

Great picture of you daughter she will have so much fun. When I was 20 I went to Japan for 3 years I always say I grew up there..

I am just tickled. My husband has been pretty grouchy about the chickens. He did not think we needed them, well today our son was sitting in the pen outside with them, and my husband looked out and our son who is ODD, ADHD, and all over the Autism Spectrum was singing softy to the chicks. He was SOLD! He said NOW he is okay with the chickens.. lol I was just tickled that my son was being so soft and sweet and gentle with our almost 5 week old EE's.

I have a busy weekend ahead, so wanted to say HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY to all the mothers here! Hope you have a wonderful day. The weather will be GORGEOUS....just what we all need. My husband and brother are doing a big BBQ for me, mom and SIL. My kids will all be here, so life is good.

Today is my 21st anniversary. I am hosting a big baby shower, tomorrow evening, so spent the day cleaning and attending to last minute details. Since I had so much to do, we decided to not go out and celebrate. So how did I spend my anniversary? Sitting in DH's overgrown garden, with gourmet pizza and beer; while watching the chicks have a ball with all the tall weeds and worms in the compost pile.

I couldn't have asked for a better evening.

Here they are exploring the buried bucket of compost....and my dog Riley is 'standing guard' on other side of fence.

My own daughter spent a year abroad in France.
I missed her so much I went and joined her for a month.

Just tucked the chicks in...I can't believe how easy it was to integrate 2 more 6 week olds into the flock. Tomorrow, 2 more and then I promise I'm done!

Why in the world would my friend's 15 pullets (7 weeks old) try to KILL 2 more 7 week old new pullets she tried to introduce yesterday??? Her 2 new girls were a little bigger than all the rest of her girls but not by much...and they freaked out and tried to kill them. Why would that happen to her and not to me?
