Like usal the regular media does a poor job of getting the word out.
Thanks to the Herald I saw it there.

I am just tickled. My husband has been pretty grouchy about the chickens. He did not think we needed them, well today our son was sitting in the pen outside with them, and my husband looked out and our son who is ODD, ADHD, and all over the Autism Spectrum was singing softy to the chicks. He was SOLD! He said NOW he is okay with the chickens.. lol I was just tickled that my son was being so soft and sweet and gentle with our almost 5 week old EE's.

So sweet!

Wish I lived closer...............

Got DD off to Florence this morning.  Because her flight left so early we decided to spend the night at the Red Lion across from the airport so she could hop their complimentary shuttle at 4 AM.  I went back to our room and waited until I knew she was safely on her way.  She should be approaching Paris soon for a 2 hour layover and then arrive in Florence a couple of hours after that.  I'm very excited for her and the wonderful opportunity to study Food and Wine of Italy, get a crash course in Italian and do an internship at the restaurant.  The school is called Apicius and is a world renowned environment for hospitality students.

My parents will be meeting her there for a couple of days later this month so I'm glad to know they'll be able to check and see all is okay with her in a couple of weeks.  She's already gotten her apartment assignment about 25 minutes walk from the school.  Her apartment faces a Piazza with a beautiful fountain in the center, a church at one end and a cafe across the street.  Such an adventure for her - and she's getting school credits!

I also had some sad news today - soon after I arrived home from Sea-Tac my gf called hysterical saying "Simon killed my chicks"!  Simon is her silky terrier.  Her 6 chicks, who were just over 3 weeks were out enjoying the sunshine in a sunny, penned area and that darn dog found a way to squirm through somehow.  She eventually found 2 of the chicks who had escaped harm, and were hiding from her LF who were free ranging in the backyard.  These were the 6 chicks I had incubated and hatched for her, including 5 wheaten Marans from zgoatlady and that single silver Ameraucana chick that I had hatched from the egg Jean gave me in Monroe.  I am heartsick - she was my little miracle chick and my gf's favorite.  Thank goodness one of the two that survived is a little wheaten Marans pullet.

My Silkie and Serama eggs are in lockdown.  :fl   Hoping for a good hatch - I've got 9 good Silkie eggs and 6 Seramas that were all looking good when I candled.  Now I need to get seriously thinking about where to put them when they outgrow the brooder... I have wonderful plans for a great little Silky house that's low to the ground with a short ramp.  I just need to find someone to build it for me!  The Seramas will alternately be in the house and then the garage, (remember when some of us used to park cars in our garages?  :lau ).  Of course on sunny days the Seramas will be outside in the covered X-pen for doses of Vitamin D.

I'm so excited for my own chickie babies I can hardly stand it.  Missing my big girl DD chick, so these fluffy babies will have to be a suitable substitute for snuggles!

Here's my last pic of Lily before the shuttle arrived to take her across the world from me - :/

So sorry about the lost chicks!

Strangely enough, one of my cousin's just left Florence; she was there for a quarter her senior year at TESC and have been there several times since. She may have taught at the American School in Naples later, but she's had such a varied career that I have trouble keeping track.

I want to go to Livorno, myself. it'll be a while.

Those of you in the Sound Sound area tomorrow, check out Prairie Appreciation Day at the Glacier Heritage Preserve between Littlerock and Gate in SW Thurston County (about a 20 minute drive SW from downtown Olympia). From 10-3 tomorrow, and absolutely free-- that's if you can make it past the native plant sale without buying anything.

The camas is stunning right now, the day will be gorgeous! This is a huge prairie preserve, some still being restored. Come prepared with picnic (no food vendors) walking shoes and cameras. The tractors will give you a ride back to the parking area.

This will be our 4th consecutive year visiting this wonderful event. I would never have believed that this would be one of the most anticipated events for my girls, but they love it. Lots of stuff for the kids to see and do. If you are still not tired, visit the Mima Mounds just a few miles north. Combined, they are some of the most unique prairies you will see. So many folks are to be credited for volunteering to restore these threatened ecosystems that once carpeted the region from the time the glaciers receded until the settlers removed the indigenous peoples and stopped the annual burning that kept it from being forested. As you drive you will see where the camas and douglas fir are growing together--most would have been prairie before the mid-19th century.

Anyhow--highly recommended!

The Glacier Heritage Preserve is one of the pieces of land Weyerhaeuser donated to preservation status (another is Woodard Cove, which was their primary South Puget Sound log shipment facility for most of the 20th century) and is an amazing place- so much of the Camas land has been landscaped out of existance (among other things; the forty I live on was a pig farm before my family got to it, around the time of the Civil War, and all the camas was eaten).

As Sweet Silver says, this is a restoration project, and doesn't have the full range of prairie flora yet. Mima Mounds is also included in the Prairie Days festivities, and has Fritillaria and other species which haven't been reintroduced at the Weyerhaeuser site.

I'll be there, unless I'm not- wearing a white hat and pale clothing and possibly being shaded by an umbrella-carrying assistant I gave birth to.

(I can be demanding, tomorrow is my birthday!).

Oh I have a brother and mother just like that! My dad keeps his head down and tries to stay out of the way.

I'm sorry to hear about all your hard work and frustration. This weekend is supposed to be great weather-wise so relax, enjoy your family and chicks and spend a little time on yourself!
