If I have 9 layers, how many eggs can I expect to get each day? 6? 7? 8 maybe? IDK what to expect but I'm excited! Maybe it has something to do with breed as well though? I have:
1 black Australorp
1 Welsummer
1 Maran/EE (possible OE)
2 buff Orpingtons
2 Easter Eggers
1 RIR
1 GLW
I have 6 and I get anywhere from 3-6 a day. Those days I get six I do a little dance!

Quote: To be a reportable disease, it has to be confirmed. If the bird dies, it needs to be necropsied by a diagnostic lab, contact your state vet, and some of their programs offer to cover necropsy for certain diseases they are particularly interested in....
The necropsy lab in Wa. is in Puyallup. It is not very expensive to get a chicken necropsied. I googled it for info.

I am glad your chicken is doing better. I posted because I have doubts that she has Marek's. Sounds more like the "lethargic" chicken. I can't read every post on this thread, but it sounds like you don't have a lot of specific symptoms to go on. That makes it very difficult for you to treat. Without a vet visit with a lot of tests you are left with making decisions and supportive care.
If she is still not eating, the vet told me that Ensure was good for chickens. I had to use a syringe to get it into mine. If you started antibiotics I'd keep going with them, for at least a week, 2 is better, unless the antibiotics state to not use for longer than Xtime. I'd also keep her quarantined from the rest.

FYI- for everyone. The vet told me there is a vet in the crossroads area that has a reputation for being great with chickens. Off the top of my head I don't remember his/her name, but it wouldn't be hard to track it down.

Good luck,

His name is Dr. Bruce Singbeil(I think that's how it's spelled). He is great!
The problem with chickens is that by the time we decide to take them in they are hard to treat.
I have made it a point after losing a few because I waited too long to take them in, to take them in quick, after just day or two of my own treatment.
Then it gives him the best chance of treating them with success.
He will also give you a lot of info on how to prevent things and what not.
He is not astronomically expensive and he usually doesn't charge for a follow up visit if you have to take your pet back.
He will just charge for meds. I think he is very reasonable and fair with his pricing.

I built a large brooder in my shed yesterday! I have always looked at the area under my work bench as wasted space.
NOT ANYMORE! The older silkies are going out there today!
They are stinky and dusty and currently in my dining room!
But they are oh so cute!!
I can place a separatin screen in the middle when I want to put the younger ones out there.
That way they can see each other and get used to each other before I put then in their coop.
The Faverolles will probably stay in there until I know which ones I am keeping.

Princess spent the night in the house in the dog crate. She actually went to sleep and didn't make a peep until 7:30 this morning when I heard her drinking water. When I went to the coop to scoop poop, someone else had diarrhea. Could that be from the antibiotics? Do I need to get to the store for yogurt and let all the girls go to town for a few weeks on yogurt every day?

Well although DH tells me all the time that I am old (jokeingly) I am 27years young with 5 kids. Well technacly only two are from me and the other three are from DH previouse marrage. But they all live with us and have chosen to call me MOM! (Their "mother" has chosen not to come around for them anymore

)
Ages are 8yr, 8yr(almost 9), 9yrs, 10yrs, and 11yrs.
I still get asked if it was a bad choise for me to have been a teen mom, but I have always been different from others my age. I got my GED when I found out I was pregnant at16, and searched for a job right away. Did not even think about state assistance. Then I had my second child just after I turned 19 in 2004. Got together with DH in 06 and by that time I had 3 jobs, one durring the week days, one after that on week and weekend nights and then another for the weekend days. I am a stay at home mommy now and I love being able to be home for my kids if they need me but I love working too. So when the next school year starts I will be looking to start working agian. If we have enough jobs going for our construction company I will just do that (which I love, hard labor is the best) but if there is not many jobs going I would rather let our guys that are out of work have the chance to support their familyies, for us it would be our second income and for some of them it is their only income. I wont take that from them. But getting off subject....

I am very happy I had my kids as young as I did. It left me young enough to be able to run around with them then and now when they have so many more things they want to do, and then still have the energy to clean, take care of the animals and have a job. I was an oddity though, I had no bad expirences having my kids that young although I had no help from family and all my friends were gone and the only money was what I worked for!

It's funny because the way some of you talk, I would have never guessed that you were any older than myself.

Firewifejess- I really hope your girl gets better soon!

And it really sounds like you guys are all haveing fun painting your new coops.

It is funny that you guys say that RIR are a meaner breed, because ours is in the top five of our friendliest birds and she was not hand raised or raised by me. Just bought her that way. She will sit on my DD's shoulder for ever.

So very happy that it is FRIDAY!

Oh yeah, and I am not having any luck on the turkey forum....oh well.

Antibiotics can cause diarrhea.
I would not give them yogurt every day, but a few times a week would be fine.
Don't give them too much yogurt either.
A Tbs per chicken is what I was told.
Just keep an eye on it.
If your other chickens don't seem sick I might take them off of it and keep Princess isolated.
You could keep Ricky with her.
I had an Ameraucana that was easily stressed. Especially when I introduced her and her friend to the flock.
She breathed out of her mouth a lot!
Stress is really hard on chickens.
I am not saying that she isn't sick, but if she seems a lot better when not with the rest of the flock it may be that integration is just taking a toll.
If that is indeed what it is, then you may want to try a different, slower way of introducing them?
It should be fine eventually. Mine took months to integrate the first time around.
Probably because I tried to do it too fast.
Now I have them in an area that is fenced off from the others but they can see each other.
I leave them like that for about 6-8 wks.
Then I take the fence away and see how they do.
I also have a seperate coop in the run area that they sleep in until that time too.
I will put them in the coop with the other girls at night when I am sure there are no serious problems.
So far that has worked for me quite well. We will see if it works this time!

What are you going to do? Give every broody a few eggs to sit on?
lol.png

You do know that broodiness seems to be catching, right? It's almost like when one does it others get the same idea.
I know it's hormonal, but it's like girls getting on the same "monthly cylce".
What are you going to do if most of them go broody on you?
You will have chicks coming out your ears if you keep going at this rate!
