Although we obviously aren't part of the heat wave, I thought I would share.

I left an entire 40lb bag of Scratch & Peck scratch out in the rain, up against the house. It wasn't soaked, but the bottom of the bag was visibly damp. Haven't opened it up yet. Do you think if I leave it out in the sun to dry tomorrow that it will be fine? I imagine that as long as it doesn't mold between now and then that once it's dry I can put it in my airtight container and use it right?

Hello, fellow Washingtonians!

I live in Maple Falls -- approximately 45 minutes east of Bellingham.

I raise Araucana chickens (the rumpless/tufted kind).

Is anyone going to the Lynden fair this summer?
Holy Cow, Anne! How did you get my avatar?!?

I'm in SW WA - just outside of Vancouver. And I'm desperately looking for bantam Araucana eggs. Might you have any?

If it's not COMPLETELY dry, and you put it in an airtight container it WILL mold. You are better off to put it in a dry place, and use it as quickly as possible.

Guess I wasn't thinking. WE use around 60 lbs of feed a DAY, so using it up goes pretty quick. I forgot, some people only have a few birds to feed. (We just bought a ton and a half! - that would be a big loss to us)

OK thanks. I'm thinking I'll lay a tarp out in the sun tomorrow and empty the bag onto it and spread it out thin so it can cook in the sun a while. Hoping that will get it dry. My girls won't get through a 40lb bag of scratch anytime soon, it'll probably take 2-3 months! eek

Hello from Eatonville! I just wanted to put a bug in everyone's ear that I'm looking for a new rooster. I'm hoping to find one with all the good friendly qualities (can catch easly). Not sure on breed though... maybe some help? I found out my new flock is most likley a barnyard mix but I would like to hatch chicks from a few of them eventually to keep things going. I like the idea of mixes, and have been kinda attracted to the green egg layers so I'm thinking about an EE Roo... (a big plus if he is attractively colored) Any other suggestions? Also, I have a need for a roo because of predators so he must be, or mature to a decent size. The current fancy bearded buff laced polish roo only attacks humans... if they turn their back.

One more thing, I cant travel too far maybe an hour drive max from Eatonville. Hubby still getting used to his newly chicken crazy wife!

Thanks in advance!
I have an EE Roo for you! He's 6 months old. I'm not sure if that makes him a cockeral still or not?

Turn the bag over and open that end. Start sharing the food from that end and keep the bag in a dry location.
Don't put it into an air tight container, just be generous with the feeding for the next few days.

If you see mould or smell a foul odour then discard, but it should be mostly fine for your flock. Sometimes, my hens seem to prefer dew moistened scratch over the dry.

Is this a chicken auction at the Enumclaw Sales Pavillion? What time on Saturday?
i have a Black Copper Maran roo you can have or two. Im heading to the auction to drop birds off 3 pullets I think and 3 roosters 2 are Black copper marans and I think the 3rd one is a rooster he's a Ameracuana he came from nice blue eggs oh hes blue himself and 2 1'2 month old pm me if you want him.

If I brought a roo to the auction (13 week old BCM/EE mix) how much could I expect to get for him? Just a few dollars? Don't know if it's worth it to bring him to auction or give him away for free ;) I just want him gone very soon; they're all getting expensive now that they eat so much!
