I'm looking to plant garlic and other fall crops. Anyone have any recommendations?

Variety? Or what plants to plant? I'm not sure what variety my garlic is - but it grows great. The stems are dying back already - either this weather has plants confused, or something. My plants are acting like it is fall already. Since garlic grows year round, it may just be getting ready to harvest. Last year I harvested, and the replanted from that harvest - that's what is growing now.

I think I'm going to have a 2nd go at peas.... in a bed that gets a little more shade than the others.

FYI We also have a Serama Rooster that lives in our house . Pierre also sets on the couch with DW and eats with her. He also travels with us. Like this past weekend we went to the Dunes and Pierre went with us. Feel free to refer to me.
Thank you, guys. That give me a bit of ammunition to fight the machine.
Just curious... does he crow and wake you up early in the morning? And, where does he sleep? In a cage or something? It would freak me out to think there was a chicken able to roam the house at night while I was asleep.
This too helps my cause as I try to explain the pros and cons of having chickens in the backyard (or house).
Don't give up on the potatoes. I have grown them in garbage cans with soil at the bottom and then I load them with straw so they are not too heavy to move. Even if it looks like the plants died early with no bloom, I dump the garbage cans out in the fall on my expired garden beds, and I usually find potatoes.

I did not grow any potatoes this year. I have a lot of extra tomato plants (green grape, snow white and red cherry), plus squash, zucchini and cucmber in the green house, only nothing is labeled so I can't tell what is what.

As an advanced master gardener from Michigan, I can't help much with crops for your area. I suggest you contact your county extension office for what is best for your area. I can say that I've done taters in a garbage can and they looked like heck during the growing season but turned out well in the fall when I dumped them out. Just like you said.

Thank you guys for sharing.

I'll be getting my chickies this week, their 9 weeks old. Two are Lemon cuckoo Orpingtons and the other two are undecided at this time. This person has several different breeds to choose from, so hopefully I'll be able to decide on the other two when I get there.. If not, I may come home with 4 Lemons.. :D

Dave: you been building any more coop? or is the "Toure de Dave" over?

I've been working on some stuff for me :) I built a very small coop that DW calls "Mamma's house". It's a small coop and run to let a broody do her thing. I'm also should finish a project this afternoon. It is a set of 4 wire-bottomed cages that I will use to break broody's. (I have 6

)

The last two weeks have been really hectic. Thing should get back to normal pace starting today.

Well -- I've managed to not cut up for other projects, the half-sheet of plywood I need to make the prototype :) I've also researched the hardware (binding posts is boring research). Let's just say, "They are still on my list"

I have seen more pics on the news, it is insane !
Have you talked to RFF and see how she is doing over there ?
Or VF ???

We had one really cool lighting storm around July 10th. No flooding. I live in the desert on purpose.

Well at least one of my girls is not a laze about. I got my very 1st egg today. Small, but perfectly formed and a nice med mahogony color. It's a beginning!

Another thing I learned today. Even though the gals like to be petted, never ever sit down with them when you have just finished mowing the lawn and have grass bits clinging to your t shirt or jeans.

Mike - congrats on the first egg. I remember how excited I was. Good for you !

Is there any easier way to keep up on this board? I haven't been on for a day and have about 90 posts to read...feeling like a slow reader

No way to keep up :) I skim a lot of posts. Jump right in, post when you like, read what you like (did I mention that I skim a lot of posts?). After a few weeks it will really start to feel like the thread slows down a bit.
