Wow those are nice containers! I've considered meal worm farming but just can't commit wholeheartedly to the idea yet. It still gives me a bit of the heebie jeebies. Bugs, larva, worms.... Yeah, not yet. I'd really like to talk DH into it and let him do all the bug wrangling!
Flaming Chicken showed me her meal worm setup when I was over at her place and it looks easy enough, but I also share your heebie jeebies.

Now if one could farm freeze dried meal worms, I'd be all over it!

Mixed breed would work, too, but I'm not convinced mutt is a harsh word. I like mutts. They're generally pretty healthy. I think there's room for pure breeds and mutts. Whatever suits a person's purposes is what they should have.
A mutt is a mutt is a mutt.......plain & simple.
My mutts, your mutts or otherwise.
Mutts !
They are NOT a pure breed.
Period !

[I have twice failed in my mealworms growing attempt. I bought super worms the first time and thanks to Kim discovered that they just grow and grow and don't reproduce . Then I bought mealworms and they all died. I may try again soon. Meanwhile my feed store is carrying the less expensive freeze dried one so my kids get those on a regular basis.

There is one more thing to be said about mutts, and it concerns just about every breed of poultry we have here in the United States:

Someone "made" this breed !
Consider case in point: Mrs. Nettie Metcalf, who bred Plymouth Barred Rocks, Buff Cochins, and BBRed Game fowl to get what we know today as the Buckeye~~~~~~~~

This Cockerel is 4 1/2 month old.
So incidentaly, yes the breed was a "MUTT" but after re-breeding and defining a "standard" ........the breed is a pure breed and breeds "TRUE" with no off sring hatching in "off" clours or form....a true breed, one that "BREEDS TRUE" each and every bird that hatches look exactly as the parent stock.
Another case:
Plymouth Barred Rocks, for which MANY of the American Breeds were conceived, are in fact bred from :
Dominiques, Black Javas and maybe Malay or/and Dorkings brought over from England.

Every breed has mixtures except the founding breeds !
The issue at best is IF you are cross breeding, develope it so as they breed true
Breeding true means that every hatch produces a bird exactly as the parent stock. It is tedious, and wears alot of us down...but to make a NEW breed, that is exactly what we breeders have to do.

Case in point:
Cream Legbars: A totally new & exciting breed !
From Leghorns, PBR's and Ameraucana....but it takes deacdes sometimes to rebreed until a breed breeds TRUE and does not hatch out weird chicks.........................from the initial stock used to "design" the breed.
It is alot different Breeding "TRUE" breeds...rather than just reproducing mutts.
If you have multiple breeds of birds inter breeding.......................YES !!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are MUTTS !!!!!!!!! with no rhyme or reason !!!!!!!!!!!!

Another issue that bugs me BAD is how alot of people cannot take responsibility for their own actions.
If ya got mutts, then ya got mutts.
Mutts lay great, but are mutts nonetheless.

Dawn- I can't reply on Etsy from my phone on vacation so I'm telling you here: the pomegranate you listed for me sounds great and if you make soap or lotions!!!! from it I would love them!

I have heard things can get quite mean spirited on the Serama thread which is why many have leapt to private Serama groups on Facebook.

I can understand why! There is nothing like this on any of the Silkie threads. I am at a loss on why certain Serama people have to be so nasty and treat each other so badly. It is a real turn off, I'll tell you but I've managed to keep my mouth shut and stay out of it. However, I draw the line when someone swears at and browbeats a child. Hence my response today.

In dogs,it is a joke that people are like their dogs but Serama's are such sweet birds with such a great disposition. Too bad the owners can't learn from their birds, huh?? LOL!! :)

Sheila :)
