Curious on something if anyone has the answer--

We have a coop with our Standard Size Layers & a coop with our Bantams.
We do however have a Bantam Roo & Rhode Island Red Roo in the Layers Coop.
Some of our birds have started laying (YAY!) -- Thing is I keep pulling out Bantam sized eggs in the Layers Coop. With the Bantam Roo in there does he affect the size of eggs they are producing..... Each Hen we have in there, "should" be laying Medium to Large & even X-Large eggs... NOT bantam size or is my idea of "medium" incorrect, or maybe because they just started laying? - I'm baffled on this

Hen Layers we have are:

(1) Silver Lakenvelder
(2) Iowa Blues
(1) Oprington
(3) Barred Rock - Think 1 is Roo tho - not sure
(1) Russian Orloff
(1) Jersey Giant (which we just found out she is)
(1) Rhode Island Red
(2) Wyandottes

Anyone have any ideas on this - None of those were deemed Bantam when we got them. Pics Below
(The 2 small were taken out of the Bantam Coop - Medium out of Layers Coop)

(Both these were out of the Layers coop) - next day 2 more of the small ones & today.)

I got my second egg today. When I cooked them both were double yolked and awesome.

Wow! Both from the same chicken? I often wonder if double yolkers have to be from a chicken who skips a laying day and then lays a double yolker the next day? Or could a single chicken lay 2 double yolkers 2 days in a row? Anyway, congrats!!! I am still 100% in love with checking for eggs. When I got back from church and checked for the first time today, there were 4 in one nest! They all lay in the same nest and hate all the other options I've provided. What will they do when all 11 of them want to lay at the same time in the morning?

Lovemybabies - it's just because they're new layers. The only med/lg eggs we've gotten so far from our flock of 20-23 week olds were double yolkers. All the others have simply been small eggs or even peewee, but they're slowly getting bigger each time the same chicken lays another egg. HTH!

Often new layers will lay small or even tiny eggs. They are referred to as "wind" eggs or "fart" eggs. They also commonly will not have a yolk. They should start laying larger eggs quickly. How large depends on the breed, nutrition and health of the hen. The roo has nothing to do with egg size; (well except maybe in his own mind

). As hens age their eggs will get larger.

How quickly? My Buff Orp was one of the first egg layers 3 weeks ago and her eggs have only gone up in size by a few grams...at first they didn't even move the egg scale, and now 3 weeks later they're still peewee or on the very small end of small eggs. WDYT?

How big is your BO? I have a couple right now from Rainwolf; A cockeral and hopefully a pullet(not laying) and they are easily the largest chickens I've ever had.
My first 2 chickens were BO. 1 normal LF size the other a bit smaller, and both laid L-XL size eggs. I got both as layers so I don't know about their first eggs.

Ok - was getting worried with our Bantam in there, that he would affect their egg size, which to me shouldn't as that's how most breed up from bantam. But being this is our first stit with Roo's & Hens.. wasn't sure. Also thought maybe we had a Bantam type bird that needs to go in with the Banties. We cant move the Bantam Roo, in with the other Bantams since would be more Roo's than Hens. Found my Frizzle slowly developed into a Roo.. now there's 3 Roos with only 5 hens...which means my Frizzle Roo needs a new home.

We had gotten a bunch more babies - which looks like some Roo's may pop outta that bunch as well... BTW! -- the Chicken Math is a killer... we now have total 50 Chickens...lol -- buuuut my dad had gotten as a "surprise" for my mom her "Silkies" -- which makes up 9 of the new babies, then 2 Buff Frizzles 1 Smooth Frizzle- Only ones that are Bantam -- Rest are standard Layers- 2 Salmon Favorelle, 4 Cochin, 3 Americaunas, 3 Orpingtons --- We lost 1 baby, most the shipment was dead when they opened the one box... so I had gotten 3 of each since they had such a rough trip, wasnt sure if any would make it... we may lose 1 more, she's doing same as our 1st orpington did... not really developing... still just as small as when we had gotten them, rest have doubled to tripled in size but that 1.... =(

They will wait in line and complain up a storm. It gets frighteningly loud. Or they will use a different nest, and complain up a storm. Or they will pile in two or three at a time, and complain up a storm.

Imp - now that you mention it, that particular chicken is quite small. She isn't growing very well like everyone else anymore. I can't wait for it to be worming time in October because that may be some of her problem, but since her only symptom of possible worms is slow growth (she's laying us an egg every day regardless), I will wait until it's time to do the whole flock in October.
